It was a landmark night for Harry Kane at Wembley on Tuesday, as the England captain reached 125 caps and matched Peter Shilton‘s record for the most appearances in the history of the England national team.
Kane reached the milestone during the 3-0 win over Czechia, drawing level with Shilton’s tally of 125 appearances. The former goalkeeper had held the record outright since the 1990 World Cup, when he ended his international career.
It has taken Kane 11 years to reach the top of the appearance charts. The striker made his England debut against Lithuania in Euro 2016 qualifying in 2015 and needed only two minutes to open his international account in a 4-0 victory.
Now 33, Kane is the only active player among England’s five most-capped men. Alongside Shilton and the striker, the list includes Wayne Rooney (120), David Beckham (115) and Steven Gerrard (114).
Kane’s two goals on the night also took his England tally to 91, extending his lead as the country’s all-time leading scorer. He is now 38 goals clear of Rooney in second place.
Despite his individual achievements, Kane is still chasing his first major trophy with England. He reached the semi-finals of the 2018 and 2026 World Cups and finished as a runner-up at Euro 2021 and Euro 2024.
Another opportunity has now arrived in the Nations League, where Kane has made an excellent start with six goals in four matches.
