Harrison Smith Returns — And the Cap Gets Complicated

Harrison Smith is back — and Tyler Forness is not doing the fanboy version. On a Labor Day Real Forno Show, Forness and producer Dave Stefano unpack the Hitman’s one-year Vikings return, the cap squeeze it creates, and a CFL-inspired pitch for a real NFL Rivalry Weekend before Week 1 vs. Green Bay.

The contract is the headline. Smith’s deal is structured as roughly $8 million base value with $4 million in per-game roster bonuses and $4 million in playoff incentives that max near $16 million only if Minnesota wins the Super Bowl. Play all 17 and he lands around $12.25 million. Forness supports the player getting paid — “Harrison Smith got his money, and on a human level, good for him” — then flips to the team view. Minnesota had about $8.8 million in cap space before the signing. After bonus, per-game money, and the leftover dead cap from the spring release, operating room looks closer to $2 million. “That’s not enough to operate a season,” Forness said. “You have to have more than that.”

The football case is layered. Forness will not pretend Smith is replaceable by a draft pick. “Harrison Smith’s brain cannot be found on the street. It cannot be drafted.” Bringing him back lets Josh Metellus stay in his own role instead of becoming a full Harrison clone. The worry is the other half of the job. Flores’ packaging still needs legs after the snap — the A-gap look that bails to single-high. “If he can’t do that anymore, then you can just absolutely destroy it. Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford, they’ll kill it.” Stefano pushed the conductor argument: “The Vikings are not paying for Smith’s legs, they’re paying for his pre-snap chaos.” Forness’s answer: chaos is worthless if quarterbacks can just throw at the 37-year-old. He also walked the ugly cap chess — Blake Cashman, T.J. Hockenson, Will Fries, Andrew Van Ginkel — where pushing money out only works if you actually want those players long term.

They also spent the open on a CFL Labor Day Classic idea: lock one mid-October weekend as Rivalry Weekend, same divisional pairings every year, trophies, merch, promotion that actually sells the fight. “Everything is pro wrestling. It is what you make it.” Then they read fan bold predictions: Kyler Murray leading the team in rushing, Justin Jefferson chasing 2,000 yards and the Triple Crown, Dallas Turner leading the league in strip sacks, Will Reichard drilling 70 in Mexico City, Super Bowl 61 matching the franchise’s 1961 founding year.
