Greenwood: Man City there to win in Champions League

Alex Greenwood says Manchester City are “going to give it absolutely everything” to try and win the Women’s Champions League this season.

City were absent from last season’s campaign, but they are back in the competition following their Women’s Super League title success in 2025-26.

Andree Jeglertz enjoyed a stellar first season with the team, and they have started their title defence in equally fine form, having won all three of their league games so far.

But their attention now turns to the Champions League, and they will begin their campaign away to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

City are given the fourth-highest chance of winning the Champions League by the Opta supercomputer, though their 9.1% win probability is significantly lower than outright favourites Barcelona (41.2%).

Greenwood insists City have their eyes on the trophy, though.

“To qualify was massively important; it’s an expectation that we have at this football club,” Greenwood told UEFA’s website.

“But every competition that we play in, we’re there to win.

“We know it’s going to be a challenge, but it’s fantastic for the club. We’re going to give it absolutely everything, like we do in every other competition, take it game by game and see how far we can go.”

City are facing a German side for the first time in the Champions League.

Bayern, meanwhile, have won seven of their previous 11 matches against English teams in the competition (L4), including both legs of last season’s quarter-final against Manchester United (3-2 A, 2-1 H).

On their last Champions League appearance in 2024-25, City lost their last two away games, both by a 3-0 scoreline to Barcelona and Chelsea, respectively.

“I’ve played in this competition enough times to know what it presents and what the challenges are,” Greenwood added.

“We worked really hard to get back in this competition where I think we belong. I’m just excited to embrace the challenge.

“Champions League, Women’s Super League, whatever competition we’re in, we’re in it with a real elite mindset to go and win, and that’s been our mentality for the last 18 months.”
