Former New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski has been asked what advice he would give to their current quarterback, Drake Maye.
The Patriots have had a solid 2026/27 season so far and currently have a 5-3 record after beating the struggling Miami Dolphins last time out.
But there is still room for improvement if they want to make the Super Bowl and Gronkowski has now stressed the importance of communication to the quarterback.
When appearing on the Up & Adams show this week, Kay Adams asked the former NFL star: “Drake pulled himself out of the yips he had going on earlier this season. If you could go into the locker room and talk to Drake and he says ‘Gro, we’re celebrating you. You’ve got four rings. What is the one thing I need to work on in my game right now so I can reach my full potential?’ What are you telling him?”
He replied: “Keep doing what you’re doing. Keep gaining the trust of your teammates and on top of that, focus on how you’re practising. That’s what it’s all about. I can talk in the locker room and build up this confidence but it’s always truly about how you prepare and how you practise in the week leading up to the game. I would give some advice about that, making sure you stay in sync with your teammates, your wide receivers and the offensive line.
“I would make the point that, to be a great quarterback and keep progressing, communication is key. Communication is everything at the quarterback position. You’ve got to get everyone in the right position on the field, in the slot. Wide receivers, you’ve got to get linemen in the right position. You’ve got to get all the calls going as well and keep communicating because that makes playing so much easier. You don’t have to think. So, I would really stress communication to Drake and tell him to keep that going.”
In 2026/27 so far, Maye has 1,983 passing yards with a completion rate of 67.1%.
That rate is the seventh-highest in the NFL for players who have at least 1,000 passing yards this season.
Meanwhile, his 15 touchdowns rank him joint-fifth in the league alongside players such as Brock Purdy and Matthew Stafford.
