Gov Adeleke gives reason for UNIOSUN VC tenure extension

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has justified the two-year extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, Prof Clement Adebooye.

Governor Adeleke cited the institution’s development, workers’ welfare and academic stability under Adebooye’s leadership as reasons for the extension.

Adeleke, represented by his Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, made the disclosure on Thursday during the 16th convocation ceremony of UNIOSUN, held at the university’s main campus in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The governor said Adebooye’s administration had recorded several academic and infrastructural achievements, which he said had contributed to the development of the university over the past four years.

According to him, “about 40 major building projects had been constructed and commissioned during the period, alongside several complementary projects aimed at improving teaching, learning and administrative activities.

“In the last four years, 40 main building projects have been constructed and commissioned for use. There is no year that I have not personally come to the campus to commission legacy projects.”

Adeleke added that the university had also benefited from renovations, procurement, solar installations and other interventions, noting that the administration had maintained peace and industrial harmony at the institution.

He said, “It is on record that UNIOSUN is the second state-owned university to fully implement the 2025 FGN-staff union agreement. So, in terms of staff welfare and the overall teaching and learning environment, this university remains a model.”

The governor said his administration’s decision to extend Adebooye’s tenure was aimed at sustaining continuity and academic excellence, adding that the extension would take effect on January 4, 2027.

He stated, “In a bid to sustain continuity of performance and academic excellence, I approved a two-year extension of the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor with effect from 4th January 2027, after strategic consultations and compliance with the state law.”

Adeleke said the decision had been supported by an amendment to the Osun State University Law 2006, which was passed by the Osun State House of Assembly earlier in September.

He also disclosed that the university’s current management had attracted five major Federal Government projects in September, with foundations laid for the projects and completion targeted for December 2027.

The governor said Adebooye had also worked to address accreditation requirements for the university’s medical school, leading to the presentation of 90 pioneer MBBS students for induction by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the award of UNIOSUN degrees.

Adeleke urged the university’s management and staff to work with the governing board to sustain the institution’s development, reiterating his administration’s commitment to supporting improved governance and service delivery.
