Gladbach becomes first club to sack head coach in Bundesliga this season

Per a press release from the club, Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that it has parted ways with head coach Eugen Polanski:

Eugen Polanski is no longer head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach. His assistant coach Tobias Trulsen has also been relieved of his duties.

“Despite a good pre-season and some encouraging signs, the team haven’t been able to get the results we were looking for in the Bundesliga,” said Head of Sports Rouven Schröder. “Our recent performances ultimately led us to the conclusion that a change was needed, and we have therefore relieved Eugen of his duties with immediate effect. Eugen is a Foal through and through. We would like to thank him and Tobias Trulsen for everything they have done for the club.”

Eugen Polanski: “Borussia Mönchengladbach has always been my club and always will be. That’s why it hurts so much that things have ended this way. After staying up last season, we made a number of changes going into this campaign. We had big plans, but we weren’t able to make them work. I’m sorry about that. I really hope Borussia can turn things around quickly. I wish the club, the team and all the fantastic fans nothing but the best. Thank you for everything we shared together.”

Until a new head coach is appointed, Jan-Moritz Lichte will take charge of the team on an interim basis. He will be assisted by Markus Gellhaus and the rest of the coaching staff.

Polanski inherited a problem with the squad at Gladbach and could not turn things around. Gladbach lost all three Bundesliga games this season and was outscored 12-3 in the process, including a 5-0 loss to SC Freiburg this weekend. At that point, the powers that be at Gladbach had seen enough to know that they had seen too much.
