Coming into their series matchup against the nationals">Washington Nationals, the San Francisco Giants had been playing much better baseball, having won their previous two series against the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs.
That momentum appeared set to continue before a ninth-inning bullpen collapse led to a 4-3 loss.
Logan Webb took the mound for the Giants following arguably his best start of the season, a game in which he threw 6.1 no-hit innings.
He carried that success into another outstanding performance, pitching eight innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out seven batters. What stood out most was his ability to put hitters away with the strikeout while consistently getting ahead in counts.
Webb threw 99 pitches, 66 of them for strikes, highlighting how effective he was at attacking the strike zone and keeping Nationals hitters under pressure throughout the night.
Offensively, the Giants struggled despite creating opportunities. They finished 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and repeatedly left potential runs on the bases. While San Francisco consistently put itself in position to score, converting those chances proved difficult for much of the game.

The Giants finally broke through in the sixth inning when Matt Chapman lined a single to left field, driving in Jung Hoo Lee. They added insurance in the eighth when Bryce Eldridge doubled to left field to score Lee. Later in the inning, Jonah Cox laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought home Eldridge and extended the Giants’ lead to 3-1.
With Webb’s night complete, Keaton Winn entered in the ninth looking to secure the victory. Instead, the inning unraveled quickly.
Winn surrendered a single to CJ Abrams that scored Luis Garcia and Jose Tena, tying the game at 3-3. Later in the inning, Daylen Lile delivered a single that brought home Abrams with the go-ahead run.
The Giants made things interesting in the ninth inning, putting runners on first and third with Bryce Eldridge at the plate representing the tying run. However, the comeback attempt fell short as Eldridge struck out to end the game.
Despite collecting 13 hits, the Giants were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities throughout the night. While they consistently put pressure on the Nationals’ pitching staff, missed chances eventually proved costly as San Francisco dropped the game.
The Giants will resume play Tuesday with Adrian Houser scheduled to take the mound. Houser enters the game with a 2-5 record and a 5.49 ERA. The Nationals are expected to counter with left-hander Andrew Alvarez, who has been solid in limited action, posting a 1-0 record and a 3.54 ERA across 20 1/3 innings.
