George Springer has emerged as an MLB trade deadline candidate & 3 teams make the most sense

You know what Kenny Rogers said, and for the Toronto Blue Jays, the 2026 MLB season is shaping up to be a year in which to fold them. The Blue Jays are currently sitting in last place in the American League East, trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by 14 games. That means it’s very much time to look towards next season.

With George Springer due to be a free agent after the season, and likely not in Toronto’s future plans, it makes sense for the Blue Jays to move and recoup some value. Now, the next question is where? Let’s take a look at three teams for whom it would make sense to acquire Springer.

The Yankees need a lot of help. Not only do they have to solve for Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton being sidelined, but now Cody Bellinger is out for the next month. Even prior to Bellinger’s injury, this made sense as New York was lacking in the right-handed power department. Now with Bellinger out as well, New York just bats.

Springer might have lost a few steps from his prime, but he also has a track record of postseason success while winning a World Series in 2017. He’s hitting .288 with four home runs and 13 RBI so far in July, and this simply makes too much sense. Sliding Springer’s right-handed bat into the middle of New York’s lineup would make a big difference. And with Stanton out, the DH spot is open.

Let’s get a little crazy here. Don’t look now, but the Astros are only one game out of first place entering action on Thursday, and they are surging. We know that Springer and Houston agree with each other, and the Astros can certainly stand to improve their lineup.

We also know that the Astros are buying and the cost here shouldn’t be too expensive. The only issue is that either Springer or Yordan Alvarez would have to spend more time in the outfield.

After surging through July, the season still has a lot of life in it for Boston. They tried trading for a right-handed bat, but then Curtis Mead promptly broke his wrist. Why not go after Springer as his replacement?
