George Russell arrived at Monaco needing a bounce-back weekend. He got a sixth-place qualifying result instead. That gap to his teammate keeps widening, and so does the conversation about how long he has left at Mercedes.
Kimi Antonelli took pole position in Monaco qualifying, extending a run of form that has turned what looked like a close intra-team title fight into something more lopsided.
The 19-year-old now holds a 43-point championship lead over Russell following his engine failure in Canada, which handed Antonelli a fourth-straight win. For Russell, who was leading that race when the power unit gave out, the mathematics of his season are becoming genuinely uncomfortable.
The championship picture alone would be enough pressure. But Russell’s situation at Mercedes could be a worry. According to rumors, Mercedes could terminate Russell’s contract if he falls to far beneath his young team-mate.
Why Toto Wolff‘s Reassurances Only Go So Far
Toto Wolff has pushed back on the seat-swap speculation before.
Speaking to the Press Association, he insisted: “George has been with us since 2017, and there’s every reason for that to continue until 2037,” adding that a move for Max Verstappen “isn’t on the cards right now” and that “the situation is completely transparent.”
Wolff’s public support for Russell has been consistent. But the path to Russell’s current deal was not smooth – throughout 2025, Mercedes openly pursued Verstappen, and that pursuit delayed Russell’s own negotiations.
Damon Hill, who knows something about being shown the door after delivering results, has been blunt on what that history signals.
Hill admitted: “It wasn’t like Toto was desperate to re-sign George.”
Hill also warned that Russell’s future at Mercedes may not be safe even if he wins the championship: “George has got the opportunity now to win the championship. But that’s not going to guarantee him his future at Mercedes.”
It has been reported that there is a clause in Russell’s contract which would mean he may have to make way should Verstappen become available for Mercedes to sign. Verstappen has had a miserable start to 2026 with Red Bull, which keeps that storyline alive regardless of Wolff’s public position.
Monaco qualifying didn’t help Russell’s case. Russell and Antonelli had split all of the pole positions between them coming into Monaco, but Saturday showed a more one-sided picture. Ending up sixth while his teammate claimed pole from the front is not the kind of performance clause that triggers an automatic renewal.
