The Kansas City Chiefs employed a peculiar strategy against the Denver Broncos without ever touching the ball, and it has left NFL fans impressed.
The Chiefs kicked off their 2026 campaign with a dominant 31-10 win over the Broncos, where both their offence and defence looked stellar.
But one strategy from Andy Reid and DC Steve Spagnuolo might be one of the biggest points of contention among fans.
Kansas City Chiefs use confusing tactic against Denver Broncos
During the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Denver Broncos, HC Andy Reid and DC Steve Spagnuolo decided to partake in some gamesmanship during timeouts.
As the Broncos would huddle and prepare the offensive scheme, the Chiefs would huddle up with 13-15 players from the defensive unit.
Of course, teams are only allowed to field 11 defensive players during a play, but by having more players huddle up during timeouts, the Chiefs are trying to confuse their opponents, as they won’t know what players will stay on the field, and thus can’t strategise on how to move past them.
This move has garnered some interesting reactions from fans, with some praising the ingenuity of the Chiefs, while others accusing them of gaming the system.
One fan wrote, “This is actually genius though. Every offence in the league should be doing this instead of complaining about the clock.”
Another fan added, “That’s coaching at work, pure gamesmanship.”
A third fan pointed out a very valid concern, noting, “Just seems like one of those things that everyone would obviously be doing, so I figured there was a reason they didn’t (too hard to get the extra players off in time maybe/ too risky?).”
“We’ve probably seen this before? Be hard-pressed to never before see a defence wait to see what personnel they’re going against, but d—, we might’ve found something,” wrote a fourth fan who wasn’t sure about the novelty of the tactic.
A fifth fan, however, pointed out that this is not actually a new tactic, saying, “This is hardly new. As someone who goes to Chiefs games at Arrowhead regularly, they do this every single time and have done so for at least as long as Spags has been here, maybe longer.”
And lastly, one Denver Broncos fan was not happy with this move, arguing, “Cheaters will always try to find a way to blur the lines…. Sickening. We would’ve won if they didn’t pull this c—.”
Depending on your fandom, your mileage may vary on this strategy. But it clearly seemed to impact the Broncos’ offence, who had a stagnant night at Arrowhead Stadium.
It’ll be interesting to see how long and how often the Chiefs carry out this strategy, and whether they can get away with it and avoid any repercussions.
