Former pitching coach Brent Strom rejoining Houston Astros in consulting role

NEW YORK – The Houston Astros are hiring Brent Strom as a pitching consultant for the rest of this season, manager Joe Espada said Thursday, reuniting with the seasoned pitching coach as they make a push for the playoffs.

Strom will be in uniform and is expected to join the Astros on Friday, when they begin a series against the Mets at Citi Field, Espada said. He will work in tandem with pitching coach Josh Miller and assistant pitching coach Ethan Katz.

“As you guys well know, Strommy is one of the architects for this organization on the pitching side of things,” Espada said before the Astros’ series finale at Yankee Stadium. “So I’m excited to bring him back, listen to his perspective, his experience. … I feel there’s a value in having him around right now as we make this push here to win the division.”

The Astros entered Thursday with a 4.70 ERA as a team, fifth-highest in the majors. They have used 17 different starting pitchers this season, tying a franchise record, with a recent lack of length from starters resulting in a large workload on their bullpen.

Strom previously served as pitching coach of the Astros from 2014-21, a stretch that included three World Series appearances. He was also a pitching coach for the Royals (2000-01) and Diamondbacks (2022-24) and spent 2025 as assistant pitching coach for the Pirates.
