Dallas Keuchel still has the fire to compete even if his arm isn’t what it used to be. The 38-year-old pitcher is attempting a comeback with the Oakland Athletics, who’ve signed him to a minor league contract, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Keuchel on a MLB mound. He last played for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024, when he had a 5.40 ERA over 16.2 innings pitched. The lefty hasn’t had an ERA below 5.20 since 2020, a year in which he went 6-2 with a 1.99 ERA for the Chicago White Sox.
Keuchel was quite the player at his peak. The Arkansas product won five Gold Gloves, made two All-Star teams and helped the Houston Astros win the 2017 World Series. His best season was 2015 with Houston, when he went 20-8 with an American League-best 1.017 WHIP and a 2.48 ERA.
It’s hard to see this move as anything but desperate from the A’s, who’ve lost starters J.T. Ginn and Luis Severino to injury. Ginn won’t miss much time with his right middle finger blister but Severino is nowhere close while dealing with a right shoulder strain. The A’s 5.34 ERA as a team is second-worst in MLB, behind only the Colorado Rockies (5.47).
Perhaps Keuchel can prove he has something left in the tank. He’ll likely get his shot soon after reporting to Triple-A.
For his 13-year MLB career, Keuchel has a 4.04 ERA and a 1.326 WHIP over 1,642.1 IP.
