MAKURDI, Nigeria – Security agencies have arrested five suspects in connection with the horrific murder of a prominent academic, Professor Gabriel Saawuan Nyityo, and his younger brother, John, in Makurdi, Benue State.
The Vice Chancellor of Rev Fr Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), Professor Timothy Terseer Alabar, made the disclosure in Makurdi while addressing media executives on his achievements during his first six months in office.
Expressing deep grief over the tragedy, the Vice Chancellor described the untimely death of Professor Nyityo as an irreparable blow to the university community, particularly the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies.
Professor Alabar highlighted the deceased’s pioneering legacy, noting that he was among the foundational scholars who established the department and drove major curriculum development and research initiatives across the institution.
“The university is closely tracking every stage of the ongoing police investigation, and we will continue to collaborate with security agencies to guarantee that every individual implicated in these heinous killings faces the full weight of justice.”

Reiterating the administration’s commitment to safety, the Vice Chancellor assured staff and students that the university is actively partnering with local authorities and national security services to reinforce security measures across campus quarters and surrounding residential communities.
