In addition to campus-level panels, the initiative incorporates independent professional oversight. Relevant professional bodies across the country have been requested to nominate seasoned experts to serve on Regional Laureate Committees.
These regional panels will be tasked with vetting submissions forwarded by individual institutions, ensuring that every research work meets international academic and practical standards.
Quota Allocations and Thematic Scope
Under the guidelines established by the National Laureate Committee, strict entry limits have been instituted to maintain the competitiveness and quality of nominations.
Each participating institution is authorised to submit a maximum of 18 entries across the three academic levels.
The quota comprises six undergraduate dissertations, six master’s theses, and six doctoral dissertations, with equivalent structural categories applied to polytechnics, colleges of education, and monotechnics.
To align academic output with national strategic development priorities, all nominated entries must fall within six designated thematic areas:
- Agriculture and Agribusiness Innovation.
- Teaching Innovation and Educational Technology.
- Medicine, Public Health, and Biomedical Sciences
- Engineering and Infrastructure Systems.
- Applied Science and Emerging Technologies.
- Law, Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
Prize Breakdown and Financial Incentives
The ₦365 million grant pool represents one of the largest single state investments in student-led research funding in West Africa. The competitive prize structure allocates substantial financial rewards to victorious scholars at every postgraduate and undergraduate tier:
Doctoral Research Category: The author of the top-ranked doctoral thesis nationwide will receive the flagship prize of ₦100 million.
Master’s Thesis Category: The premier master’s thesis will be awarded a ₦50 million research prize.
Undergraduate Category: The best undergraduate project will be rewarded with a ₦35 million prize.
Thematic Awards: In addition to the grand prizes, the programme will present 15 specialised Thematic Awards valued at ₦12 million each, distributing an additional ₦180 million across standout entries in specified discipline areas.
Integrity Protocols and Multi-Stage Evaluation
A central mandate of the 2026 Tertiary Institutions National Laureate Programme is the institutionalisation of academic integrity, copyright protection, and anti-plagiarism standards.
To guarantee transparency, all nominated research projects must first be formally uploaded to the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD).
Upon successful upload, each submission will be issued an official National Document Number (NDN) before consideration by evaluation panels.
Emeritus Professor Sambo emphasised that the mandatory NERD indexing serves a dual purpose: safeguarding the intellectual property of young Nigerian researchers and creating an enduring, centralised digital archive of Nigerian academic scholarship.
Timeline and National Economic Impact
The committee has established firm timelines for the execution of the maiden edition. Institutions must complete and submit their panel membership details by August 15, 2026.
The final deadline for uploading and submitting completed candidate entries on the national portal is set for August 31, 2026.
Characterising the programme as “a landmark investment in intellectual capital,” Professor Sambo urged institutional leaders to demonstrate exemplary commitment to the screening exercise.
He noted that the initiative is designed not merely as an academic competition, but as a catalyst for economic transformation, aiming to bridge the gap between academic research and practical industrial application by funding scholars whose innovations hold clear potential to solve real-world challenges.
