Julian Alvarez has publicly admitted he wants to leave Atletico Madrid, and Fabrizio Romano believes that could ultimately help Barcelona land the striker despite Atletico’s resistance.
The Argentina international addressed his future in an interview with ESPN, making it clear he has spoken to Atletico officials and believes a departure is now the best outcome for everyone involved.
Those comments arrived after Barcelona reportedly saw a €100 million bid for Alvarez rejected by Atletico Madrid, who have publicly pushed back against speculation surrounding the forward’s future.
While Atletico’s stance appears firm for now, Romano has explained why situations like this often end with a transfer once a player has made his intentions known.

Alvarez did not attempt to hide his feelings when discussing his future.
He told ESPN: “I don’t want to hide or act like I don’t want to be clear. I try to be honest. I spoke to Atletico people and I think the best for everyone involved is for me to leave. I want to fulfill my dream.”
Those comments represent the clearest indication yet that Alvarez wants a move away from Atletico Madrid, with Barcelona widely viewed as his preferred destination.
Romano believes that could prove significant as the transfer saga develops. Explaining the situation, the transfer expert noted that clubs often take a hard stance initially before eventually accepting that a sale may be the most practical solution.
Romano said: “In football, in general, in cases like this, a team might react by saying ‘no you’re staying’ but later on towards the end, as Julian said, the best solution which makes sense to everyone is to sell and invest the money.”
Why Atletico Madrid may face a difficult decision
Atletico have shown little desire to negotiate so far. Reports have suggested the club rejected Barcelona’s €100 million offer and responded aggressively to speculation linking Alvarez with a move to their La Liga rivals.
However, transfer situations can change quickly once a player publicly expresses a desire to leave. Alvarez has now done exactly that, placing Atletico in an increasingly difficult position as the summer window progresses.
Keeping an unhappy player is rarely viewed as an ideal outcome, particularly when a club has the opportunity to receive a significant transfer fee that can be reinvested throughout the squad.
That does not mean Atletico will suddenly lower their demands or agree to a deal with Barcelona, but Romano’s point is that these situations often evolve once all parties begin searching for a solution.
For now, Atletico remain resistant and Barcelona remain interested. What has changed is that Alvarez has finally spoken publicly, and his comments have provided the strongest indication yet that he wants his next chapter to begin at Camp Nou.
