The Ohio State Buckeyes’ season took another hit on Saturday with a 41-28 loss to Oregon, and star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith’s frustration was on full display. Now, one analyst thinks Smith may have already played his final game for the Buckeyes.
Former NFL running back Damien Harris predicted after the game that Smith won’t play again this season, arguing that there’s nothing left for him to play for. But Harris also made one claim that doesn’t quite line up with reality, saying that Smith is “not going to get a Heisman” this year.
Ohio State’s Tough Stretch
Ohio State jumped out to a 14-0 lead over Oregon at Ohio Stadium, but the Ducks responded with 38 straight points. It was the Buckeyes’ second straight loss after a 30-18 defeat at USC, and head coach Ryan Day said afterward that “there needs to be accountability” for the team’s struggles.
Smith went more than two full quarters without a catch against Oregon, and he was seen yelling toward the Ohio State sideline late in the third quarter. One Ohio State reporter even called Smith “a petulant child” for his behavior.
Smith’s usage had already been a hot topic after the USC loss, when Fox’s Joel Klatt said that Ohio State’s approach with its star receiver “can’t be your game plan.” Smith did eventually get going against Oregon, finishing with seven catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.
The loss dropped Ohio State to 6-3, and with starting quarterback Julian Sayin sidelined by an arm injury, the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff hopes are all but gone.
‘What’s there to play for?’
Speaking on CBS Sports’ postgame show, Harris said he believes that Smith is done for the season.
“We just watched Jeremiah Smith play his last snap at Ohio State. He’s done. He’s gonna pack it up. He’s not playing anymore this season. The season is gone. We saw, this isn’t a College Football Playoff team. They were already on the outside looking in. The season’s over. He’s already etched his name in history. He’s got the touchdown record, he’s got the reception record, he’s got a national championship. He’s not going to get a Heisman this year. What’s there to play for?” Harris said, via CBS Sports.
Harris acknowledged that the Buckeyes still have their rivalry game against Michigan left to play, but he didn’t think that would be enough to keep Smith on the field.
“In my opinion, there’s nothing to gain, there’s everything to lose if you’re Jeremiah Smith. I don’t think that he plays again for the rest of the season for Ohio State,” Harris said. “There are bigger things out there for Jeremiah Smith than what the rest of this season has to offer.”
However, Harris’ claim that Smith isn’t going to win the Heisman isn’t a sure thing. Heading into the weekend, Smith is still on top of the Heisman Trophy odds despite Ohio State’s blowout loss.
Needless to say, Ohio State fans will be hoping Harris is wrong about all of it.
