How will teams qualify for the LA28 Olympic Games?

The qualification process blends existing structures with a brand-new event. Five of the six places in each competition will be decided through a combination of established ICC tournaments and ICC T20I rankings, all in line with the sport’s approved Future Tours Programme.

The sixth and final spot in both events will be settled at the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. That tournament will feature eight nations in each competition, comprising the next highest-ranked teams in the T20I rankings who have not already booked their place.

Which teams have already qualified for the LA28 Olympic Games?

The ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has already produced the first qualifiers. Australia, Great Britain through England, India, and South Africa have sealed their spots as the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia, and Africa, respectively, with places capped at one per continent.

The remaining men’s places will be filled using the ICC Men’s T20I rankings, with the highest-ranked eligible teams from each of the four continents on December 31, 2026, progressing. The same ranking-based principle governs much of the women’s qualification picture, too.

As hosts, the United States is eligible to qualify for both events, provided they appear in the top 15 of the relevant T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026. Should they fall short, the place passes to the next highest-ranked nation.

The West Indies face a unique hurdle. Because they are a composite member representing several nations rather than a single Olympic body, they cannot directly take a quota place.

A dedicated Caribbean Qualifier may instead decide which national committee represents the region at the 2027 event.

LA28 Olympic Games: Format explained

On the field, each qualified nation can name a 15-player squad. The six teams in each event will be split into two groups of three, with every side playing the others once before two further matches against opponents from the other group who finished in a different position.

The top two finishers will contest the gold medal match, while the third and fourth-placed teams play off for bronze. A combined 28 matches will be staged across both competitions, all at a purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona, on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said the structure was carefully designed with balance in mind. “This qualification structure has been designed to optimize competitive standards and global representation within the IOC and LA28 participation guidelines,” Gupta said, framing the model as a milestone on the journey to 2028.
