It8217;s been eight months since Brian Kelly was fired as the head coach of the LSU Tigers.
He was replaced one month later by Lane Kiffin, who signed a seven-year, $91 million contract making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
And in the months since losing his job, Kelly has been aggressively preparing to land another job. And while it may not be as a head coach, Kelly did find another gig that’s allowed him back into college football: consulting for the Memphis Tigers football team.
Memphis head coach Charles Huff recently admitted to the Commercial Appeal that he’s spoken with Kelly, ex-Texas coach Charlie Strong, and former Florida State and Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher to get some intel about how the school can move up to being in a power conference.
“I got on a call with Brian, and we talked for about an hour,” Huff stated. “One of the things that he has seen grow are recruiting departments. And as they continue to change these rules, who can go on the road recruiting, it’s changing now.
“… Talking to him was really good, because there’s a lot of humility in him. He’s like, ‘There were some things that I wish I did different.’ At that level, you don’t have a chance to go backwards. But that’s given me an opportunity to kind of think about some things that we may run into that we haven’t run into yet. So it’s been really good.”
Kelly isn’t getting paid for the consulting work he’s doing with Memphis, but he’s presumably in a spot where he’s just happy to take what he can get.
Huff also kept the door open to reconnect with Kelly toward the end of the regular season when he needs help with recruiting and attacking the transfer portal.
Many expect given his track record, which includes a career 297-109-2 record with nine conference championships, nine bowl wins, and two Division II championships across 36 seasons at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, and LSU, that Kelly will land another major college head-coaching job.
Some big jobs that could come open next season that Kelly could be in consideration for include Baylor, Florida State, South Carolina, USC, and Wisconsin.
