Manchester United have decided to give Michael Carrick more time to turn things around, according to The Athletic reporter Laurie Whitwell.

The decision comes after an intense meeting between the club’s senior leaders on Monday.

Carrick’s position as head coach was hanging by a thread following Sunday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

They’re now 16th in the Premier League table after an eight-match winless streak.

The loss was United’s second consecutive defeat by a three-goal margin, following their 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on Wednesday.

United have collected just seven points from their opening eight league matches, their worst start to a top-flight season in 40 years.

However, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held discussions on Monday before deciding to keep Carrick in charge for now.

He was at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday to watch the Under-21s face Hull City, then returned to his usual duties on Tuesday.

Carrick will lead the team against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday despite several difficult weeks at Old Trafford after a run of poor results.

Captain Bruno Fernandes was left out of the starting line-up against Bournemouth for what Carrick described as “purely sporting reasons”.

The Portuguese midfielder was an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat after questioning Carrick’s tactics following the defeat to Como.

Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martinez also criticised the club’s recruitment strategy in an emotional post-match interview a week earlier.

Despite the poor results, United supporters still backed Carrick after Sunday’s defeat. Fans sang his name as he walked around the pitch to applaud them, before turning their anger towards the players.

Carrick became United’s permanent head coach in May after impressing during his temporary spell in charge.

He replaced Ruben Amorim in January and helped the club collect 39 points from their final 17 league matches, guiding them to third place.
