'Everything' being evaluated as Colts search for answers on defense

As the Indianapolis Colts search for answers defensively, “everything” is being evaluated heading into Week 2.

“It always starts with me and we have to do a better job,” DC Lou Anarumo said on Tuesday via Colts.com.

The Colts had very few answers for the Ravens‘ offense. Both on the ground and through the air, the Ravens were able to generate explosive plays, averaging over 8.0 yards per play.

Lamar Jackson was efficient and also averaged a whopping 13.0 yards per play. Derrick Henry averaged nearly 6.0 yards per rush while running for 135 yards.

The Ravens finished the game with 506 total yards on offense. 

“A couple of their tempo plays caught us off guard,” Anarumo said, via The Athletic’s James Boyd. “No excuses for that.”

One of the potential changes that could take place is whether or not safety Cam Bynum wears the green dot in Week 2. Communication issues were at the core of many of the problems that the Colts experienced this past Sunday defensively.

As ESPN’s Stephen Holder noted, this potential change is more so a question of whether it makes sense to have Bynum shouldering this responsibility when he’s often the deep single safety — which further complicates things. “It’s not an indictment of Bynum,” Holder posted on X.

Nickel cornerback Justin Walley had a difficult debut, allowing five receptions for 93 yards. Anarumo, however, remains 100% committed to Walley, according to Mike Chappell.

Up next for the Colts’ defense is a matchup with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense.
