Every V.E. Schwab Book, Ranked

· · 6 min read

V.E. Schwab’s books belong to the fantasy genre, but many of her most iconic works defy categorization. From her standalone novels to her sprawling series, Schwab’s best books put character first and use their magical worlds as a means to further explore the relationships and lessons learned by her protagonists. Unafraid to lean into the dark side of fiction, Schwab never promises a happy ending for all of her characters.

We won’t include Schwab’s short stories or comics, focusing primarily on her full-length novels, whether they belong to the young adult or adult niches of fantasy. Whether she’s writing high fantasy books or letting the mystical elements of the text speak for themselves, Schwab crafts worlds that sweep readers away, but there is one work that remains her best.

Everyday Angel (2014)

Everyday Angel includes all three installments of the Everyday Angel series, which are short and fast-paced enough to warrant a collection readers can tear through. The Everyday Angel books were Schwab’s middle-grade debut, making them remarkably different than the writing she’s become known for in the years since. However, since most of Schwab’s adult novels are incredibly dark, the adventures of an angel trying to get her wings is a much gentler introduction to Schwab for young readers.

Tunnel Of Bones (2019)

Schwab’s Cassidy Blake series has a bit of a sophomore slump in the sequel, Tunnel of Bones, which sees Cassidy and her ghost best friend Jacob travel to Paris and uncover secrets in the catacombs. A charming middle-grade paranormal fantasy jaunt, it’s the weakest of the Cassidy Blake series. However, this still makes Tunnel of Bones an enjoyable read with plenty of age-appropriate thrills for younger audiences. Schwab has plenty of fun with the history and mystery hidden within the streets of Paris.

Our Dark Duet (2017)

The second book in the Monsters of Verity series, Our Dark Duet, is an underrated addition to Schwab’s canon, but it didn’t quite live up to the heights of the first installment, This Savage Song. However, for readers who enjoyed This Savage Song, Our Dark Duet will deliver the answers to questions left by book one. Kate and August are trying to adjust to their new lives and roles in Our Dark Duet, but it seems that fate isn’t finished with them yet in the sequel.

The Unbound (2014)

After the success of The Archived, Schwab completes the duology with The Unbound, a satisfying conclusion to Mackenzie Bishop’s story. Grappling with her double life as a Keeper of the Archive and a normal girl attending school, Mackenzie is a relatable protagonist despite her magical circumstances. It’s another complex mystery that pushes Mackenzie to her limits and delves further into the secrets of the Archive. Though Schwab has expressed that a third installment might be coming one day, for now, The Unbound is what readers have.

The Archived (2013)

The magical fantasy library in Schwab’s The Archived is different than the traditional buildings that house books. In the world of Mackenzie Bishop, the library known as the Archive contains the dead, and it’s up to her to contain dangerous residents of the Archive to keep the universe safe. Mackenzie isn’t just haunted by the dead whom she must protect and guard, but by the people in her past whom she’s lost. Emotionally resonant and gripping, Schwab’s early YA novel is the first book in The Archived series.

The Ending Writes Itself (2026)

Written under the pen name Evelyn Clarke, The Ending Writes Itself was co-written by Schwab and Cat Clarke, diving into a world the pair know well: the world of authors. Unlike Schwab’s typical works, The Ending Writes Itself belongs to the mystery and thriller genres rather than fantasy. The book sees a group of struggling authors whisked away to a secluded island to finish a dead writer’s manuscript and discover the secret of his death along the way. Though it’s a departure for Schwab, The Ending Writes Itself is an enigmatic thrill ride.

The Near Witch (2011)

Best-known for her series, Schwab still knows how to craft a fully immersive standalone novel, like 2011’s The Near Witch. The novel was Schwab’s debut, setting the stage for her prolific writing career. Belonging to the YA genre and including an epic love story, a chilling fairy tale, and a protagonist who must solve the mystery of the missing children in her town, The Near Witch is a strong first outing for Schwab. While her later works are very different in tone, Schwab’s penchant for excellent characters and world-building is apparent.

City Of Ghosts (2018)

There are many examples in fantasy of characters having a near-death experience and gaining the ability to see ghosts. While this premise might be familiar, Schwab makes it fresh and new in City of Ghosts, the first book in the Cassidy Blake collection that sees the protagonist go on her first paranormal adventure. With a ghostly best friend in tow and a sharp sense of humor within the middle-grade story, City of Ghosts makes for a diverting fantasy narrative.

This Savage Song (2016)

This Savage Song dives headfirst into the Monsters of Verity series, a collection that incorporates the themes, genres, and thrills that Schwab is best known for. The YA novel follows Kate Harker and August Flynn, foils with incredible chemistry, as they must reconcile their beliefs about the roles of monsters and humans in the city they share and try to control. A must-read supernatural fantasy book: This Savage Song will get under readers’ skin and make them appreciate Schwab’s YA work.

Bridge Of Souls (2021)

It’s always a treat when Schwab sets her magical stories in real cities. The Cassidy Blake series travels to the haunted streets of New Orleans in Bridge of Souls. Cassidy Blake is back and more ready than ever to hunt ghosts in the city famed for its paranormal activity. As one of Schwab’s series intended for younger audiences, the ending of Bridge of Souls isn’t as dark or graphic as the author’s other work, but that doesn’t make it less compelling.
