Everton’s Summer Has Raised Serious Questions About the Club’s Direction

Everton supporters have endured plenty of difficult transfer windows over the years, but this one may prove among the most damaging.

The collapse of Folarin Balogun’s proposed move from Monaco on deadline day served as a fitting conclusion to a chaotic summer. After Everton agreed a deal, renegotiated terms following concerns identified during a medical and even submitted the necessary paperwork, the striker reportedly changed his mind at the last possible moment and returned to Monaco.

It was an embarrassing end to an already troubling window.

A Squad Left Weaker Than Before

The biggest concern is not simply that Everton missed out on Balogun. It is that the club appears weaker than it was at the end of last season.

David Moyes has seen key players depart while arriving at the start of the campaign with fewer options available. The sale of Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City is particularly difficult to justify. Moyes had previously suggested it would take an extraordinary offer to part with one of Everton’s most influential performers, yet the eventual fee fell well short of that description.

The result is a squad that looks thinner and arguably less capable of competing for higher ambitions, despite the return of Jack Grealish on another loan spell from Manchester City.

Pressure Growing on The Friedkin Group

Much of the scrutiny now falls on Everton’s owners.

The Friedkin Group entered the club promising a fresh start and a long-term rebuild. Instead, as reported by The Times, supporters are increasingly questioning both the strategy and level of ambition being shown. Plans that were supposed to accelerate Everton’s progress this summer have instead left fans wondering whether the club is focused more on financial efficiency than meaningful growth on the pitch.

The failed attempt to sell academy prospect Harrison Armstrong only added to the perception of a club lacking a clear direction.

Moyes Deserves Better

Amid the criticism, Moyes appears to have emerged with his reputation enhanced.

The Everton manager has consistently pushed for higher standards while attempting to shield the club from growing unrest. Yet he now faces the prospect of navigating another demanding Premier League season with a squad many believe has been weakened rather than strengthened.

Expectations of challenging for Europe were already ambitious. They now look even more unrealistic, and Moyes will be hard pressed to deliver something to change the mood inside the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

An Important Period Ahead

Everton’s recruitment team, executive leadership and ownership group will all face tough questions in the coming months.

Supporters were told this summer would represent a major step forward, and consequently, excitement among them reached a high level going into the transfer window. Instead, it has exposed concerns about planning, decision-making and ambition. While some of the club’s new arrivals may yet prove successful, that will not erase the wider feeling that Everton missed an opportunity to build momentum.

For a fanbase of a club that hasn’t won a major trophy in over three decades, desperate for progress, that may be the most frustrating part of all.
