Everton and Crystal Palace have reached a complete agreement to exchange Dwight McNeil and Brennan Johnson, according to Fabrizio Romano.
McNeil will join Crystal Palace, while Johnson will move in the opposite direction and become an Everton player. The clubs have agreed a straight swap without an additional transfer fee.
Both medicals are beginning today. McNeil and Johnson are expected to sign four-year contracts with options for another season once they pass their examinations and complete the remaining paperwork.
The agreement revives a move that came close to happening six months ago. McNeil completed a medical and agreed personal terms with Palace during the winter transfer window, but the London club withdrew before the deal could be completed.
Palace changed its plans after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s proposed transfer to AC Milan collapsed. SoccerNews covered McNeil’s return to Everton following the failed move, but the winger will now receive another opportunity to join the club.
McNeil moved to Everton from Burnley in 2022 and became a regular on the left side of the team. He has made more than 120 appearances for the club, contributing through his crossing, set pieces and ability to create chances from deeper positions.
His Everton contract was due to enter its final year, which made a summer departure increasingly possible. Palace already knew the financial and personal conditions required after negotiating with the player during the winter.
Johnson’s stay at Selhurst Park will end after only seven months. Crystal Palace signed the Wales international from Tottenham for a club-record £35 million in January, but he did not score during his first half-season with the club.
The 25-year-old had previously produced his best Premier League performances with Tottenham. He also scored the winning goal against Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final, securing the first major trophy of his senior career.
Johnson will give Everton more speed on the right side and a winger who prefers attacking the space behind opposing full-backs. McNeil offers Palace a different style, with his left foot, delivery and ability to slow an attack before selecting a pass.
The exchange allows both clubs to change the balance of their attacks without paying a separate transfer fee. It also gives two players who struggled for regular starts last season a clear route into new teams.
