Epic Games may not be quite as widely used storefront for PC gamers as Steam, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a range of incredible deals available. One of its biggest draws comes in the form of the platform’s weekly free game listings, which update regularly and give players an assortment of sometimes random and sometimes incredible free downloads that you can keep in your library forever.
All you need to take advantage of these giveaways is a free Epic Games account, and you can claim each title before the promo period expires. It’s then yours to download and play whenever you like, even after the price returns to normal. New giveaways typically arrive every Thursday, and this week’s selection is particularly well-timed for horror fans looking for something spooky to play over Halloween.
Starting today, October 29, Epic Games is making a 2024 9/10 horror game that’s a complete hidden gem free to download and keep forever.
Epic Games’ newest free game is a particularly good one for horror fans, especially with Halloween just around the corner. Starting Thursday, October 29, at 11:00 ET, Sorry We’re Closed will officially be available to download and keep forever for free, with the promotion running until November 5. The game normally retails for $24.99, making this one of Epic’s more worthwhile giveaways in recent weeks.
Originally released on November 14, 2024, Sorry We’re Closed is an indie survival horror game developed by à la mode games and published by Akupara Games. Despite flying somewhat under the radar compared to bigger horror releases, it has earned an impressive 4.5/5-star rating on Epic Games, with an 82 average critic score on OpenCritic and almost 90% of critics recommending it.
The game itself is a bizarre, neon-soaked take on classic survival horror, combining elements of Resident Evil and Silent Hill with an eccentric cast of characters and some genuinely inventive gameplay mechanics.
Players assume the role of Michelle, a young woman living in London who finds herself cursed by a powerful archdemon searching for love. With her life potentially coming to an untimely end, Michelle must navigate a supernatural world filled with angels, demons, and other strange entities while attempting to break the curse before it’s too late.
Gameplay blends traditional fixed-camera exploration with first-person arcade-style shooting, offering an interesting combination of old-school horror mechanics and more modern action. Players must explore unsettling environments, solve puzzles, collect items, and carefully manage their resources while battling demonic enemies. There are even optional tank controls for players who want a more authentic retro survival horror experience.
One of the game’s defining mechanics is Michelle’s supernatural Third Eye, which allows her to see between different realities, expose hidden identities, and uncover secrets. It’s also essential during combat, revealing enemies’ weak points and allowing players to unleash devastating attacks by chaining together precise shots.
There’s also a surprising degree of player influence on how the story unfolds, with RPG-style dialogue choices allowing players to change the lives of various characters. Multiple endings mean there’s plenty of replay value, particularly for players interested in uncovering everything the game’s unusual world has to offer.
For horror enthusiasts who missed Sorry We’re Closed when it originally launched in 2024, this Halloween giveaway is a perfect excuse to finally give it a shot. All that’s required is a free Epic Games account, and anyone who claims the game before the November 5 deadline can keep it in their library permanently, with no subscription or additional purchase necessary.
