Replacing Pep Guardiola was never going to be a normal managerial appointment. For a decade, Guardiola shaped Manchester City in his own image, delivering an era of dominance that may never be repeated. Now, Enzo Maresca inherits one of football’s most demanding jobs, and while he arrives with impressive credentials and a deep understanding of the club, his true challenge is not replicating Guardiola’s success.
It is building the next chapter without allowing City to stagnate.
Create His Own Identity
One of the most encouraging aspects of Maresca’s first public appearances has been his refusal to become a Guardiola tribute act.
The new City manager has made it clear that he will not simply “copy and paste” the methods of his predecessor. While there will inevitably be similarities in style and philosophy, City appointed Maresca to lead, not imitate.
His first objective is therefore obvious: establish an identity that remains recognisably Manchester City while bearing his own fingerprints.
The moment he starts trying to be Guardiola, comparisons become impossible to escape.
Avoid the Post-Guardiola Collapse
History is not on Maresca’s side.
Manchester United spent more than a decade trying to recover from Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. Arsenal needed years to rebuild after Arsene Wenger. Even Liverpool’s succession plan after Jurgen Klopp eventually ran into difficulties.
The biggest task facing him is ensuring City avoid becoming the latest superpower to regress after the departure of a legendary manager.
Keep the Winning Culture Alive
At most clubs, qualification for the Champions League would be considered a successful season.
At Manchester City, expectations are very different.
Guardiola leaves behind a squad built to compete for every major trophy. City supporters and executives will expect title challenges immediately, regardless of who sits in the dugout.
Maresca may talk about focusing on daily improvement, but ultimately he will be judged on silverware. That is simply the reality of managing Manchester City.
Resolve Key Squad Issues
Several important decisions await him before a ball is kicked.
The captaincy remains open following Bernardo Silva’s departure, with Rodri, Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland among the leading candidates. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Rodri’s future amid ongoing speculation linking him with Real Madrid.
Maresca will also be tasked with helping Phil Foden rediscover his best form after a disappointing period that culminated in his omission from England’s World Cup squad.
Getting Foden firing again could feel almost like signing a new player.
Navigate Off-Field Uncertainty
Perhaps the biggest variable facing Maresca is one he cannot control.
Manchester City’s long-running legal battle with the Premier League continues to hang over the club. Whatever the eventual outcome, the situation creates uncertainty that every manager would rather avoid.
Maresca handled questions about the issue diplomatically, but he knows any major development could have significant consequences for the club during his tenure.
Success Will Be Measured Differently
The greatest challenge facing Maresca may simply be expectation.
Most managers are given time to build. Most managers are allowed mistakes. Most managers inherit teams with obvious flaws.
Maresca has none of those luxuries.
He takes charge of a club accustomed to winning titles and competing for every major honour. Fairly or unfairly, success will be measured against the standards Guardiola established.
That is an almost impossible benchmark. Yet if Maresca can successfully guide City through their first post-Guardiola era while maintaining their place at the top of English football, it may prove to be the most impressive achievement of his managerial career.
