Enzo Fernandez transfer saga: Latest twist suggests Chelsea face major decision

Chelsea could be facing one of the biggest decisions of the final week of the summer transfer window, with Manchester City reportedly prepared to meet the Blues’ huge £120 million valuation of Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentina international remains one of Chelsea’s most valuable players, but City’s midfield rebuild has created a realistic possibility of a blockbuster Premier League transfer.

With the deadline approaching, Chelsea must now decide whether a record-level fee is enough to justify losing a midfielder who should still be entering the best years of his career.

Man City ready to meet Chelsea asking price

According to Football Insider, Man City are ready to meet Chelsea’s £120m asking price for Fernandez and are expected to accelerate negotiations before the window closes.

Chelsea have reportedly not ruled out selling the 25-year-old if their valuation is satisfied. City, meanwhile, have greater financial flexibility following major midfield departures and see Fernandez as one of their leading targets.

The situation has become more intriguing after City strengthened elsewhere in midfield.

The Guardian reported that City have agreed a deal worth up to €100m for Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, having already signed Elliot Anderson earlier in the window. Despite that spending, Fernandez remains among the midfielders City are considering.

£120m would be difficult to ignore for the Blues

Chelsea should not be actively looking to lose Fernandez, but £120m is the kind of offer that demands serious consideration.

Fernandez offers creativity, passing range and experience at the highest level, and selling him directly to a Premier League rival would carry obvious risk.

Strengthening Man City while weakening your own midfield is hardly an ideal scenario.

However, Chelsea have spent heavily again this summer, and a £120m sale would provide enormous flexibility to reinvest elsewhere while also representing a profit on the fee paid to Benfica in 2023.

The bigger question is whether Chelsea believe Fernandez is absolutely central to Xabi Alonso’s long-term project.
