Dwyane Wade praised Angel Reese as an important role model after the Atlanta Dream star shared a heartwarming moment with his family during WNBA All-Star Weekend.
Angel Reese’s return to Chicago for the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game included a special moment with the family of one of the city’s greatest basketball icons. Following Saturday’s All-Star Game at the United Center, the Atlanta Dream forward stopped to speak with Dwyane Wade’s daughter, Kaavia James Union Wade. Reese asked how she was doing before surprising her with a recently released “Barbie Signature Role Models Angel Reese Doll.”
Reese also greeted Wade’s wife, actress Gabrielle Union, and his daughter Zaya Wade during the interaction. The WNBA later shared a video of the exchange on social media, and Wade responded with a clear message about the impact Reese has made beyond basketball.
“Role Models are important,” Wade wrote.

Reese’s gift carried additional meaning because the doll was created as part of Barbie’s Role Models collection. Reese became the first professional basketball player to receive her own Barbie doll when the collaboration was announced in May.

The doll celebrates Reese’s influence on young fans and includes several details inspired by the WNBA star, including her “Bayou Barbie” necklace and her signature Reebok basketball shoes. Handing one of the dolls to Kaavia gave Reese an opportunity to personally share the honor with one of her young supporters.
Wade’s response was brief, but it reinforced how he views Reese. The three-time NBA champion has previously praised her for embracing the responsibility that comes with being a prominent figure in women’s basketball. Reese developed a connection with Wade and his family while playing for the Chicago Sky. Wade, who owns a minority stake in the franchise, publicly supported Reese during her time in Chicago.
After Reese met Kaavia near the Sky’s tunnel following a previous game, Wade thanked her on social media for “being a model for all of our daughters.”

Dwyane Wade continues supporting Reese after Chicago exit
Reese is no longer a member of the Sky after being traded to the Dream during the offseason, but her relationship with the Wade family has clearly remained intact. Wade was supportive of Reese following the trade and described her as a “star.” Their latest interaction showed that his admiration for her extends beyond what she accomplished in a Chicago uniform.
The moment was also fitting for Reese’s return to the city where her WNBA career began. Chicago selected Reese with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft after her successful college career at LSU. She quickly became one of the league’s most recognizable young players, earning consecutive All-Star selections before beginning the next chapter of her career in Atlanta.
Although Reese did not play in Saturday’s All-Star Game, she remained one of the most visible players throughout the weekend. Her exchange with Kaavia became another memorable moment, and Wade’s message helped explain why. Reese’s production and personality have made her a WNBA star. Her ability to connect with young fans has made her something more.
For Wade, that is exactly why role models such as Reese matter.
