Throughout the run of Boston Blue thus far, there’s been one big unanswered question lingering, and while there’s movement on when Tom Selleck will join the spinoff as Frank Reagan, it’s not necessarily the answer Blue Bloods fans wanted. Throughout the 14-season run of Blue Bloods, the legendary TV actor embodied the family patriarch and NYPD Commissioner with ease, his commanding presence allowing everything to filter through a Frank-shaped lens. Moving away from Blue Bloods wasn’t easy for viewers, but it was even more difficult for the cast, who struggled with the decision to end the series despite their sacrifices to keep the show going.
With Selleck specifically speaking up about how the switch from Blue Bloods to Boston Blue on CBS’ behalf was a tough pill to swallow after he’d taken pay cuts in order to keep the show moving ahead, it felt like seeing the patriarch on the spinoff series wasn’t likely. Though Boston Blue has, thus far, featured several different Blue Bloods stars joining in on the spinoff series to reprise their original characters, Selleck was a consistent holdout that stars like Donnie Wahlberg didn’t have any update on. Though other Reagan siblings and family members forged ahead, Blue Bloods fans were waiting for word about Selleck.
Even with Selleck being surprisingly outspoken about his feelings surrounding the end of Blue Bloods and the beginning of Boston Blue, however, there’s finally been some progress made on the Frank Reagan front. With Boston Blue season 2 changing Danny Reagan’s (Wahlberg) life once again, Frank’s return could be something viewers can have hope for, even if it’s not anytime soon.
Tom Selleck’s Boston Blue Appearance Condition Explained

While many Boston Blue converts have been looking for Blue Bloods representation on the new CBS series, Selleck has been among the holdouts for the series as it’s continued. Others, like Bridget Moynahan and Len Cariou, have joined in on the spinoff to bring that Reagan family feeling to the series, but Selleck has yet to even make it seem possible he’ll make an appearance in the future. Thankfully, Wahlberg has heard the criticisms of Boston Blue failing to get the Reagan family patriarch on the series, and spoke about it in an interview, clarifying that it will happen eventually.
Sharing that the right conditions have to be present for Selleck to return to the franchise, Wahlberg made it clear that he understands it’s what Boston Blue fans are waiting for. As Selleck’s return as Frank is so anticipated by viewers, the creative team wants to have the best story possible for him. Sharing that Selleck “takes the legacy of the show…and Frank Reagan very seriously,” Wahlberg understands that to bring the legendary actor back into the mix, the story has to be resonant and important.
With things changing for Danny once again now that Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) and her daughter Elena are a part of the broader picture in Boston, whether that storyline is a personal or professional one remains to be seen. What this does tell Boston Blue viewers, however, is that the reunion isn’t entirely in the works yet. With Will Estes joining in on Boston Blue season 2 as Jamie Reagan, it’s likely that Frank’s return won’t come to pass this season, at least not in its foreseeable stretch.
Boston Blue Needs To Save Frank’s Appearance For A Special Milestone

While Wahlberg did clarify that Boston Blue does plan to get Selleck back into the mix as Frank, nothing is solid as of now, which means the circumstances for bringing him back into the fold haven’t been settled yet. With Frank’s return still up in the air, it’s clear that rather than bringing him back into the mix for a professional reason, like assisting on a case or giving Danny advice about his position with the Boston PD, his return needs to be personal. A milestone, which could be a personal or professional achievement, would be the best case scenario.
Though Frank has been there for the majority of Danny’s milestones thus far in his life, seeing his relationship with Baez unfold throughout Boston Blue has been something more isolated from the rest of the Reagan’s. Danny’s partnership-turned-romance, which only came to fruition after he lost his wife Linda between Blue Bloods season 7 and 8, is something viewers have enjoyed watching pan out. Now that Baez and her daughter, Elena, are a more permanent part of Danny’s life, his role as the father to a young child has come into play on Boston Blue, which leaves a new avenue for Frank to return.
If Danny and Baez’s relationship continues to gain traction and grows more serious, it’s possible that Danny could look to Frank to seek advice or counsel about a second marriage. Frank returning to see his son moving forward with his life after tragedy could be the perfect way to bring him back into the fold.
Why Boston Blue Is Better Off Without Frank’s Appearance (For Now)

Although not seeing Frank on Boston Blue after seeing several other Blue Bloods cast members join the series has been somewhat disheartening, it’s actually better for the spinoff series that they hold out on bringing Selleck in too quickly. Selleck, whose career has spanned decades and solidified him as one of the most well-known TV actors of all time, is a huge get, and Frank is a huge character to bring into a new environment. While viewers are ready for Frank to come to Boston Blue, the young CBS series is still finding its footing after spinning off from a massive hit.
As Boston Blue establishes its own identity away from Blue Bloods, seeing minor appearances from the original show’s cast members is great, but Frank requires a big story with serious implications. Boston Blue, which is taking its time to carve out its own identity as a series, has the opportunity to cultivate the right environment for Frank’s big return by putting it off. Bringing Selleck in for a bigger story, one he as an actor is able to take seriously, is the right path forward.
That, however, means Boston Blue has to have the right foundation for a bigger story to exist, which takes time. By establishing its overall identity and then bringing Selleck’s Frank back into the fold, the story will be richer for the actors and for the viewers. The complicated Reagan family dynamics deserve the spotlight, and by holding out for some time, Boston Blue is ensuring viewers will get the richest story possible for Frank’s inevitable return to the franchise.
