Donald Trump confirms he will attend 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland despite protests

Donald Trump has confirmed he plans to return to Ireland next year to attend the 2027 Ryder Cup in Limerick.

The US president was meeting Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House in Dublin to kick off a two-day visit to the Emerald Isle, during which he also made the explosive assertion that he would “love” to see a united Ireland.

Asked if he would come back to Ireland for the next edition of the Ryder Cup, Trump replied: “I will, absolutely. It’s a big tournament.”

Limerick’s Adare Manor will stage the event between 13 and 19 September next year, marking the competition’s first return to Ireland since County Kildare played host in 2006.

Trump added that he believes the Ryder Cup should be held at the golf course he owns in Turnberry, Scotland.

“I do think the Ryder Cup should be held in Turnberry but it won’t be – probably because they give it out ten years in advance,” he said.

His intent to make a future trip across the Atlantic in 12 months’ time comes amid huge protests of his visit to the country, with demonstrations against his foreign policy, specifically regarding US involvement in Gaza, set to overshadow his golfing trip.

Martin, however, told Trump he was “very pleased to welcome you to Ireland” and added that he was “particularly pleased” that he was able to attend the ongoing Irish Open, which sees Irishman Shane Lowry topping the leaderboard going into the third round.

The US president watched the event from a heavily secured area behind bulletproof glass, with concerns over his safety heightened following the then-recent killing of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

He was mostly cheered by the partisan crowd but was also on the end of some boos, especially when he emerged from the tunnel near the first tee. If he was to return to Ireland for next year’s Ryder Cup, he would be expected to receive a far more hostile reaction from fans in attendance.

Team Europe will go into the event at Limerick off the back of a historic triumph at Bethpage Black, defeating Team USA 15-13 to end record a first away win since 2012.
