Dolphins cut struggling QB Mark Gronowski, add two newcomers

Undrafted rookie quarterback Mark Gronowski did not make it to the first preseason game at Miami Dolphins training camp.

The former Iowa and South Dakota State quarterback was waived, the team announced Friday evening, after consistent struggles in camp.

Earlier Friday, Gronowski was intercepted twice in practice, one which could’ve gone for a touchdown the other way for linebacker Jackson Woodard and another by safety Major Burns, which was deflected by cornerback Ethan Bonner.

The two interceptions, plus several others over the previous week and a half of camp, come among limited practice reps as Gronowski was the Dolphins’ fourth quarterback on the depth chart, behind Malik Willis, Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller.

Gronowski shined in college, originally at South Dakota State, where he won two FCS national championships. He went to Iowa for his senior season. There, he completed 166 of 262 passes for 1,741 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while rushing for 545 yards and 16 more touchdowns as a true dual-threat signal-caller.

While letting go of a quarterback, the Dolphins did not pick up another one Friday.

They made two other additions in the secondary instead, signing safety Tanner Wall and claiming cornerback Ahmari Harvey off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Harvey was an undrafted signing out of Georgia Tech of the Denver Broncos in May. He spent part of the offseason program with the Broncos and training camp with Pittsburgh, up until the Steelers waived him recently.

At Georgia Tech, he appeared in 43 games with 27 starts and recorded 121 tackles, 28 passes defensed, four interceptions, a sack, 5 1/2 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Wall was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders after he went undrafted out of BYU and subsequently cut.

At BYU, he appeared in 45 games with 30 starts and recorded 147 tackles, seven interceptions, nine passes defensed and a forced fumble.

In order to make room for two players after the Gronowski cut, the Dolphins also waived safety Omar Brown with an injury settlement.
