Heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, the “magic number” for the Los Angeles Dodgers was one, with either their own win or a San Diego Padres loss punching their ticket to another NL West pennant.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, as after Blake Snell’s start was limited to one inning, the Dodgers lost 6-2, and the Padres put a whopping on the Colorado Rockies, 9-3. But how much do the players actually care about “magic numbers” and when pennant milestones are reached? Well, according to reliever Blake Treinen, they don’t at all, as he told reporters after the loss.
“I honestly have zero idea where our magic number is until you said that. I haven’t had a chance to follow it. I know we’re really focused on getting the best version of ourselves right now. So, to highlight your assumption of whether we’re struggling with back and forth or is it on our minds, I don’t think it’s on our minds. I haven’t seen it,” Treinen revealed.

“There’s been years in the past where it’s come down to the wire, I think, in ’24 against the Padres, you start wondering, is this going to click, and we’re going to have an opportunity to win a division? Right now, I think we’re just focused on being the best version of ourselves. We’ve worked really hard to be in a good position to win the division. That’ll come when it comes, and I think we’re just doing our best to fine-tune as much as we can, myself included.”
Now granted, maybe Treinen is just downplaying things because he’s the veteran in the clubhouse, and wants to set a good example for his younger teammates. Or maybe the Dodgers simply know they have a morning game to close out their Reds series and don’t want to get too ahead of themselves down the stretch? Either way, the Dodgers have a chance to do it again on Thursday and turn their attention to the next “magic number,” seven, which is how many wins they need to clinch a Wild Card round bye.
