Dispersal order and drones for football derby

Officers said they will be using extra powers, drones and its mounted unit to police the “eagerly-anticipated” Black Country derby on Sunday.

Wolverhampton Wanderers meet West Bromwich Albion for their first league meeting in five years. The early kick-off at Molineux starts at midday.

West Midlands Police said it has worked with partners “over many months” to prepare and ensure people can savour the day safely.

In a crackdown on any antisocial behaviour, harassment and and crime, dispersal order powers will be in place in Wolverhampton city centre and the wider area for 24 hours from 08:00 BST, the force said.

Police said anyone told to leave the area, who then returns, can be arrested.

In a joint statement on Monday, the football clubs told supporters to expect additional measures including “enhanced stewarding” after trouble a at a FA Cup meeting in 2024 saw 43 people arrested, 12 charged and sentenced and five given permanent club bans.

Former Wolves player Jody Craddock has added to calls for calm, telling BBC Radio WM fans of each club “probably work together day in day out but the switch is flicked during a derby”.

“Just watch it, try to enjoy it, and embrace it for what it is,” he said.

Trains and trams are expected to be busy, said the force, which is working with British Transport Police and transport bosses.

“It’s the first time the two clubs have met at Molineux, with fans present, for a long time and I’m sure both sets of supporters will be passionately backing their teams,” said Supt Tim Robinson, who is overseeing the police operation.

“The supporters help make this the fantastic occasion it is, and it’s important everyone feels safe heading into the city and at the stadium.

“So we won’t tolerate any behaviour which causes fear, harm or threatens to tarnish the reputations of other fans who can be passionate, but remain law-abiding, in proudly getting behind their team.”
