Dirt-cam delay delivers hilarious banter on Tigers’ telecast

On a beautiful, sunny night in downtown Detroit, the Tigers and New York Yankees still weathered a delay.

It was a dirt-cam delay. How’s that for a new one?

In the bottom of the fourth inning Monday night at Comerica Park, the series opener between the Tigers and Yankees was delayed briefly as the grounds crew worked on the dirt camera located behind second base. Apparently, the camera was an annoyance to Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The whole scene made for some hilarious banter on the Detroit SportsNet broadcast with play-by-play man Jason Benetti and analyst Andy Dirks, as the broadcast utilized some fun vantage points of Chisholm scooping dirt on top of the small camera that pops up just above the turf, maybe by an inch or so.

“I can’t see!” Benetti said.

“Help! Help!” Dirks added.

“This is an obstructed view seat now,” Benetti said.

Dirt cameras are not new to Major League Baseball. The cameras are approved by the league, and they provide unique and up-close angles of plays on the field.

When the situation was finally resolved, after five minutes or so, the hashtag #ImWithDirtCam started making its way around X (formerly Twitter). The Tigers’ social media account cheekily posted, “dirt cams have feelings too.”

In the end, dirt-cam stayed put, and technology won the day — as it tends to do in 2026.
