The Houston Texans are currently 2-5 heading into Week 9, coming off a bye week. While they get the lowly 0-7 Los Angeles Chargers, there is a real question as to whether this team can really contend.
With the Jacksonville Jaguars at 6-2, the Texans need a lot of help to make up the ground needed to win this division, let alone make the playoffs. They could use the trade deadline to help, but their poor record might make it more sensible to pass on adding help.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Texans are checking in on two specific trade markets despite their shaky standing. Those two markets the Texans are interested in are a brutal indictment of a few roster moves this team made this offseason.
Texans check in on trade markets at two positions that highlight offseason mistakes
“The Texans have at least checked in on available running backs and safeties,” Breer reported before the trade deadline.
Houston looking at running back and safety help is a brutal indictment of some of the team’s top offseason additions.
This offseason, the Texans spent meaningful draft capital on a trade for running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions. He’s currently hurt, and hasn’t been very good this season when he’s been healthy.
With the Texans looking into the RB trade market, it’s a sign they don’t really believe in Montgomery. Woody Marks has been fine, so any RB interest is likely an indictment of the ex-Lions running back.

Safety is a similar issue for the Texans, as they could really use some help at the position after Reed Blankenship has been a big disappointment. He signed after a few years with the Philadelphia Eagles and has been extremely underwhelming.
To make matters even worse, before the season, they traded for Kayson Boutte with the New England Patriots. To get him, they gave up second-year safety Jaylen Reed.
After trading for Marvin Harrison Jr. and getting Tank Dell back, Boutte has fallen down the depth chart. Reed would’ve been a good piece for this defense right about now.
So, with the Texans sitting at 2-5 heading into Week 9, they’re reportedly looking to acquire RB and safety help. That interest shows that their additions of Montgomery and Blankenship, and the trade of Reed, were mistakes.
