‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Star Jack Alcott Teases Dexter’s Biggest Problem Yet

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, Episode 2.

  • In an interview with Collider, Jack Alcott teases growing tension between Dexter and Harrison as Harrison’s new job with NYPD Homicide puts their different ideas of justice to the test.
  • Harrison and Dexter have grown closer, but Alcott warns their more mature relationship could lead to even bigger clashes as Season 2 continues.
  • Harrison’s first day at Homicide brings some awkward surprises, including discovering that Fiona, whom he recently slept with, is his training officer and the captain’s daughter.

Family dinners are about to get a whole lot more awkward in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. Jack Alcott‘s Harrison is officially a cop, which could make things a little tricky when your dad happens to be serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall). In Episode 2, “Young Blood,” Harrison starts his new job with the NYPD Homicide, but there’s one small problem: his dad’s idea of justice usually involves plastic wrap and a very sharp knife. As Alcott tells Collider, “If they’re looking at the same individuals, there’s a very, very different result.”

During an interview with Collider in Toronto to celebrate 20 years of Dexter with Paramount+, Alcott opened up about Harrison’s new career, his growing trust in Kadia Saraf‘s Detective Claudette Wallace, and why his relationship with Dexter might be heading for some serious trouble. “As much as they love each other, I think they might knock heads a little harder,” he teased.

We also put Alcott to the test with a little game called “Dexter’s Code: Petty Crimes Edition,” because not every crime deserves a kill room. Some people are just really annoying.

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Sees Harrison and Dexter With Very Different Ideas About Justice

Becoming a cop could change their father-son relationship forever.

COLLIDER: In Episode 2, Harrison does tell Dexter to leave The Ripper to Claudette. I’m wondering, is becoming a cop more like changing where he draws the line with his dad? Because I feel like it is a little bit of a rebellious thing, but it’s also kind of being like in the family history, he’s still going to be a cop like his Grandpa Harry was.

JACK ALCOTT: That’s what I love about it is it’s both. It’s absolutely both. It is them working alongside each other because they’re both sort of pointed at justice and their parallel, but they’re definitely not the same. There’s going to be friction there. If they’re looking at the same individuals, there’s a very, very different result. I feel like there’s a different morality between the way that they both look at things. You would want somebody to be for justice, go to court, go to jail, all those things. He sees things differently.

ALCOTT: He’s like, “I could just justice him right now.”

Dexter does come over to help Harrison move in, which is a really sweet moment, but we know he’s making up for missing graduation, which is horrible. How do you play Harrison this season, figuring out whether this is his dad genuinely trying to be a dad or he’s actually looking for answers for things, because he does ask about the Ripper?

ALCOTT: What I like is that we got to bake in a bunch of time because of this time jump. We’re starting with a version of Harrison and Dexter that are more comfortable with each other, and they’ve got some great father-son moments, but we also get to see them talk as adults, as peers, and it makes those father-son moments, I don’t know, land a little harder, or be funnier because it’s not all that we do. We’re going to have two dudes talking scenes. We’re also going to have, like, talkin’ shop scenes. So, I think that is going to be a bit of a balancing act as the season continues. Because with the way that we are learning that we don’t see things the same way, and the ways that we disagree, I mean, you can’t avoid that forever. That’s going to become relevant, and that’s going to have to be talked about at some point.

Harrison’s New Job Is Already Getting Complicated on ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

Alcott explains why Harrison puts so much trust in Detective Wallace.

It is a really great thing to see. The writing has evolved so much from when we saw you in New Blood to now, and you have had all these layers of growth. Now you’re a cop, and you get to be in this precinct with Detective Wallace, and I feel like she already has her eye on you because of what happened in Season 1, but the thing is, your character really does trust her. There’s a component there where you want to help her; you want to be in the same room as she’s learning so many different things about The Ripper. What does Harrison see in her that makes him trust her judgment, and how does that compare with how he trusts his dad?

ALCOTT: That’s a great question. I think Harrison has always been drawn to control — not needing to have control over other people, but people who have it together, people who are in control of themselves, and it’s exemplified in Claudette, and oddly, it’s exemplified in Dexter in a very, very different way. He has this impulse that, to a degree, he can’t control, but his entire life, through the code and through all of his experience, has managed to, I mean, manage his urge, and that takes extreme control. Even if you look at the earlier seasons, the women that Harrison ends up with either have it together or are kind of badass. And in this season, of course, he ends up sleeping with his training officer, the person that’s his boss. It tracks. So seeing how meticulous Claudette is and how much she cares, I think, is something that makes Harrison go, “I want to do that.”

There’s an interesting chaos to that. [Laughs] I wonder what his zodiac sign is because I feel like there are so many different layers to that.

I will say, though, with Fiona, he does discover her working in homicide, and her dad is Captain Mixon, which I feel is going to be so much like what we’ve talked about before, but I feel like there’s going to be a lot to see in the next episodes. What is the most fun about playing that moment when his personal life is now starting to mesh with his actual work life?

ALCOTT: I mean, it’s just maximum awkward, man. And as an actor, you’re just like, “Oh my gosh, this is going to be so much fun!” Like, how many landmines can we put in this tiny room that you’re going to have to dance around? And all of them landing one after the other in that moment of, like, “Oh, she’s here. Okay, you’re in homicide. Great, I need help. I need… Oh my God, you’re my training officer. Why are you here? Your dad is the…? Oh my God.” We get all those one after another. It’s just a lovely setup for plenty of tense moments.

Dexter and Harrison’s Growing Pains Are Far From Over in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2

Alcott teases a more mature but potentially explosive conflict.

I’m excited for that, because part of what I love about Dexter is there’s also that dark comedy. It’s not just that everybody’s killing someone else, but it is that component, and you have very good delivery when it comes to some of those sharp moments, so I really can’t wait to see. Looking beyond Episode 2, what does Harrison still need from Dexter that makes it difficult to hold his dad accountable, even to call him out? Like he can’t really do it because he’s still trying to work through those motions with him.

ALCOTT: They’ve developed a shorthand at this point, and they have the ability to talk to each other, but now that Harrison’s a cop, I think some of that shorthand goes away. I mean, I think they’ve got shorthand as buddies, they’ve got shorthand as father and son, but they don’t have a shorthand yet for how to navigate, not just disagreeing, but potentially being in each other’s way professionally.

I do love the dynamic of the two of you. You and Michael [C. Hall] are so great. You have amazing chemistry, and those scenes are always so dynamic. Without giving away the plot, without giving away major spoilers, what’s a scene later this season that you could tease that was a moment between you and Michael that really surprised you, where both of you gave each other something that you never really saw before in another scene?

ALCOTT: We’ve seen Harrison and Dexter have conflict. We’ve seen them disagree. It’s usually Harrison being like, “Fuck you, Dad!” And we’ve seen them butt heads. But now that we’ve got this more mature relationship, this more comfortable relationship, and more familiar relationship, and now we’ve got a professional relationship, that conflict, likewise, is going to be a little more mature. As much as they love each other, I think they might knock heads a little harder.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 streams every Friday on Paramount+ in the U.S.
