EXCLUSIVE: When Dexter: Resurrection returns for its second season later this month, Charley Brown’s villain status will undergo a transformation, according to Uma Thurman.

Thurman joined the franchise during Dexter: Resurrection season 1, which debuted last year on Paramount+ Premium. Charley was introduced as Leon Prater’s right-hand person and the head of security. An ex-Special Ops officer, she eventually ditched Prater and left town in the finale due to her boss’ deception. Dexter then killed Prater and disposed of his body in the water.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan, Thurman teased what fans can expect from her character in Dexter: Resurrection season 2, which premieres on October 30.

Whereas Charley was the bodyguard in the first season and covering a lot of ground, the upcoming season will see her “off the leash” and “living for herself” instead of always being at the beck and call of Prater.

After everything she’s put up with, she now has to come to terms with what she did and what she allowed to take place. As Thurman described it, “She has an ax to grind with herself that is probably going to land on the head of someone else.”

Charley is trying to make amends for her own inner struggles and conflicts, but it might end up getting taken out on someone who crosses her. Without Prater in the picture, she is “liberated and has kind of gone rogue,” which fans will see in season 2.

Thurman praised Dexter: Resurrection writers and executive producers Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds for their “beautifully written” depiction of her character, which she considers a gift after all the various on-screen roles she’s had throughout her career.

This time around, Charley gets to work a lot more with Dexter, “who shows me how it’s done…He keeps me from getting too crazy.”

Uma Thurman: “In season 1, I’m the heavy. I’m the bodyguard; I’m the security detail; I’m covering a lot. I think she’s off the leash now, and she’s living for herself, and she has an ax to grind with herself that is probably going to land on the head of someone else. But it’s really her own conflict with herself she’s trying to make amends for.”

During the same interview with ScreenRant, Michael C. Hall, who has played the titular character since 2006, acknowledged that Dexter and Charley didn’t interact very much in the first season, though “when they did, it was gnarly.” Now, in season 2, he and Thurman get to explore the “broader spectrum” of their characters’ dynamics.

Michael C. Hall: “Charley and Dexter didn’t have a lot of direct interaction last season. And when they did, it was gnarly. So it was nice to be able to luxuriate in a broader spectrum of their relationship this time around.”

After the original Dexter ended in 2013 following an eight-season run and two Emmy Awards, the franchise was revived in 2013 with the first spinoff, Dexter: New Blood, which brought back Hall in the lead role.

While it only aired for one season, the team continued on with the prequel Dexter: Original Sin and now Dexter: Resurrection. The end of New Blood made it seem like Dexter had died, but Resurrection revealed that he not only survived but also that he’s trying to outrun his past.

Hall and Thurman’s co-stars on Dexter: Resurrection are Jack Alcott, David Zayas, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Dominic Fumusa, James Remar and Desmond Harrington. Joining them for season 2 are Brian Cox, Dan Stevens, Bokeem Woodbine and Nona Parker Johnson.

After 20 years, there are still plenty of stories left to tell about Dexter Morgan. As Thurman and Hall teased, Dexter and Charley will be crossing paths in ways fans have never seen before, which will create plenty of intense drama and shocking twists along the way.

Dexter: Resurrection season 2 premieres Friday, October 30 on Paramount+ Premium.
