With strong pitching keeping the game close early, the Tigers used a 6-run seventh inning to pull away from the host San Francisco Giants and take a dominant 8-0 shutout victory on Saturday.
Jackson Jobe, making his first start since May 28 of last year, looked incredible on the mound. His first strikeout topped 100 mph on a fastball, and he added three more strikeouts in five innings of work. Allowing just one hit and one walk in his comeback from Tommy John surgery last summer, he was more than efficient.
Meanwhile, Giants starter Landen Roupp had his way in the first five innings, striking out three and allowing just two hits against a Tigers squad that looked to repeat Friday night’s hitting struggles.
After five scoreless innings, Detroit finally broke through … but in a very anti-climactic way. Every runner that got on base for the Tigers in top of the sixth was because of a walk, with Spencer Torkelson‘s five-pitch walk bringing in the first run of the game.
The Tigers went into the top of the seventh and took advantage of Trent Harris making his major-league debut for the Giants. Zach McKinstry, Kevin McGonigle, and Dillon Dingler hit back-to-back-to-back big hits, scoring two runs for Detroit and gave Harris his “welcome to the big leagues” moment.
Reiver Sanmartin came in in relief but the Tigers’ bats kept rolling. Riley Greene hit a single, then pinch-hitter Eduardo Valencia got a loud hit that center fielder Drew Gilbert lost in the sky to score both Greene and Dingler. Then Max Clark hit his first major-league triple to score Valencia and give Detroit a commanding 7-0 lead.
After 15 innings without an extra-base hit in San Francisco, the Tigers ripped off four in one frame. Clark added an RBI after a forced ground-out in the top of the ninth, extending the lead to 8-0. Tyler Holton and Ty Madden split the last four innings in relief, combining for just one allowed hit and three strikeouts to complete the shutout.
The Tigers look to win the series against the Giants Sunday afternoon on the last game of this west coast road trip.
