Detroit‘s top prospect is coming to the majors.
The Detroit Tigers are promoting center fielder Max Clark from Triple-A Toledo, according to a report from Baseball America’s Emily Waldon.
The Tigers drafted Clark at No. 3 overall in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, the same draft in which the Tigers selected infielder Kevin McGonigle at No. 37 overall. McGonigle and Clark entered the 2026 season as the No. 1 and No. 2 prospects in the Tigers’ system, respectively, with McGonigle making his major league debut on Opening Day and Clark starting the season in Toledo.
Despite a poor showing during spring training in 2026, Clark has produced in his first season in Triple-A, hittings .276 with 11 home runs, 42 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 90 games entering Thursday. Clark came in at No. 14 in Baseball Prospectus’ midseason prospect rankings, dropping eight spots from his preseason ranking but still placing among the top prospects in baseball.
And with the Tigers’ season taking a disappointing turn, the organization has indicated that Clark is ready for a major-league challenge.
The Tigers drafted Clark in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Franklin Community High School in Franklin, Indiana, making the 18-year-old the No. 3 overall selection after Pittsburgh Pirates Cy Young Award-winner Paul Skenes and Washington Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews. Clark was one of five top-five overall picks the Tigers made in a six-draft span from 2018-25, joining right-handed pitcher Casey Mize (No. 1 overall in 2018), outfielder Riley Greene (No. 5 in 2019), first-baseman Spencer Torkelson (No. 1 in 2020) and pitcher Jackson Jobe (No. 3 in 2021).
Clark was the 2023 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year and a Vanderbilt commit before the draft, while also playing for Team USA in the 2022 WBSC U-18 World Cup (along with McGonigle). Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris praised Clark’s all-around talents soon after the selection.
“He was the best player on our board at that pick, and we are thrilled that he got to our pick,” Harris said. “We think Max is a five-tool player. I think that label gets thrown around way too much in our industry. We think Max has all five.”
Clark immediately showed his skills in rookie ball, hitting for a a .954 OPS over 56 plate appearances in the Florida Complex League, but managed only six hits with 12 walks in 51 plate appearances (.154 batting average) in Low-A Lakeland in 2023.
Clark spent most of his 2024 season in Lakeland before being promoted to High-A West Michigan on July 23, 2024. From there, he put up a .765 OPS over 157 plate appearances in 34 games, though he hit much better for West Michigan in 2025, slashing .285/.430/.427 over 68 games before a promotion sent him to Double-A Erie on July 8. The lefty also participated in the 2024 MLB All-Star Futures Game in Arlington, Texas, going 1-for-3 with a single.
The Tigers promoted Clark to begin the 2026 season in Toledo, where Clark has put up arguably his most impressive year.
The Tigers invited both Clark and McGonigle to spring training, with both players considered longshots to make the Opening Day roster despite their high prospect rankings. McGonigle made the best of his opportunity, hitting .286 with three home runs and 13 walks over 63 plate appearances, while also showing major-league ready defense and convincing the Tigers he was ready for the majors.
Clark, on the other hand, attracted a lot of negative attention for on-field and off-field reasons.
The outfielder misplayed two routine fly balls in Detroit’s third spring training game on Feb. 24, a bad omen for the rest of his spring. Clark went 0-for-13 at the plate in his final eight spring games and was cut from the roster well before Opening Day.
Clark was also criticized by some analysts for his appearance, notably flashing his chains, tattoos and eye black from the start of spring. Clark fired back at the criticism with a long social media post, with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch defending his player’s appearance.
“I love that he has the confidence to be himself. That’s a staple of what’s expected when you come into our clubhouse under any team that I’m on,” Hinch said. “Max is being himself, and Max is fitting in perfectly on a really good big-league team in his first major league spring training. Our guys love him. I think people are incredibly unfair when they can criticize with no merit.”
For his part, Clark used his disappointing spring training as a growth opportunity, consistently demonstrating in Triple-A the five tools that have made him a highly-rated prospect. And with the Tigers bringing him up for his first taste of big-league action, Clark will have the opportunity to demonstrate why the Tigers made him a No. 3 overall pick in the first place.
