Denny Hamlin’s win in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 was already a major moment, but he made sure it carried a deeper meaning.

After earning the 63rd NASCAR Cup Series victory of his career at Michigan International Speedway, Hamlin paid tribute to the late Kyle Busch with a custom-designed flag and matching hat.

The unique design honored both chapters of Busch’s career and served as a reminder of the respect Hamlin continues to hold for his former teammate.

Hamlin began planning the tribute after Nashville

Hamlin said the idea was set in motion immediately after his victory at Nashville Superspeedway the previous weekend. Knowing another win would tie him with Busch on the all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins list, he wanted to be prepared if the opportunity arrived.

That opportunity came at Michigan, where Hamlin secured career win No. 63 and moved level with Busch for ninth place in Cup Series history.

The tribute required more thought than simply displaying a number. Hamlin wanted the design to represent both the No. 18 Busch drove during his championship-winning years with Joe Gibbs Racing and the No. 8 he raced with at Richard Childress Racing.

The final logo combined Joe Gibbs Racing’s stylized No. 1 with Richard Childress Racing’s stylized No. 8, creating a one-of-a-kind design that reflected the two numbers most closely associated with Busch’s career.

Trademark restrictions mean the flag will never be sold

The tribute also required cooperation from multiple trademark holders. Richard Childress Racing owns the stylized No. 8, Joe Gibbs Racing owns the stylized No. 1, and Hamlin’s apparel branding incorporates Michael Jordan’s Jumpman logo.

Because of those licensing considerations, Hamlin confirmed the flag and hat were approved strictly for one-time use. No merchandise featuring the combined design will be produced or sold.

For Hamlin, the gesture was never intended to become a commercial product. Instead, it was an opportunity to honor a driver he credited with teaching him a great deal during their record-setting 15-year stint as teammates from 2008 through 2022.

Joe Gibbs indicated additional plans to remember Busch could take place when the organization gathers to celebrate Hamlin’s Michigan victory this week.

While the win added another milestone to Hamlin’s Hall of Fame-caliber career, the tribute ensured the focus remained on Busch’s legacy and the impact he continues to have throughout the NASCAR garage.
