Colorado Buffaloes head football coach Deion Sanders disclosed his bladder cancer diagnosis last July.
Sanders, affectionately known as Coach Prime, disclosed at a press conference that he had undergone surgery to remove his bladder, and Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urological oncology at University of Colorado Cancer Center, added that Sanders was officially “cured of cancer.”
Eleven months later, Sanders appeared on “Good Morning America” to assure everyone that he’s still “healthy,” “cancer free,” and “got my swagger back,” but he also didn’t shy away from detailing how harrowing bladder cancer was for him.
“Last year at this time, I’m fighting cancer [and] didn’t know which way it was gonna go,” Sanders said.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer added, “We fought the battle, and we won the battle fighting cancer, and it was a tremendous and a tumultuous battle. I’m thankful to be sitting here right now. I acquired some partners along the way, like Depend.”
Sanders acknowledged the fear and whiplash associated with going from an all-time great athlete — the only athlete to have played in a Super Bowl and a World Series — to “sitting in the room, don’t know what’s what, can’t control your bladder.” He described “peeing in the bed” and how self-conscious he would be that he had accidentally wet himself at public events.
Sanders urged people to be proactive and get evaluated because early detection led to a more favorable outcome for him.
As noted above, Sanders starred in MLB and the NFL in the nineties. He was a six-time All-Pro cornerback and won two Super Bowls — one with the Dallas Cowboys and the other with the San Francisco 49ers. In 1996, Sanders made NFL history by regularly starting at cornerback and wide receiver for the Cowboys.
Sanders has been the head coach at Colorado since December 2022. The Buffaloes finished 4-8 in 2023, 9-4 in 2024, and 3-9 last season under Sanders. On “GMA,” Sanders emphasized that he’s looking forward to “winning” this upcoming season.
