Colorado football is finally back on the field, and Deion Sanders made the opening message simple: start over and set the standard now.
As fall camp began in Colorado Springs, Sanders told his team to treat day one like it matters because it does. The Buffs are trying to move past a 3-9 season, and Sanders framed camp as a reset instead of a carryover.
“It’s Day 1, fellas, set the tone that you want to establish for yourself,” Sanders said. “Day 1 is going to be just like Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, so you set the tone, you set the standard for you.”
The message from the first team meeting was interesting as well, as Coach Prime was all about urgency, discipline and eliminating distractions.
“I have no patience,” Sanders said in a clip of the meeting posted by Thee Pregame Show. “I’m not here to play. I’m here to win. I’m here to dominate.”
That matched the mood around a team coming off a 3-9 season. Sanders wants Colorado to treat camp like a reset with complete focus on the goal ahead. He also cut off a brief interruption by a woman trying to enter the room during the meeting, a small moment that fit the large message that the team is here to work.
Sanders said he planned to speak to the team again later about attitudes and how players have handled themselves in position meetings. He wants the coaches to make expectations clear and the players to respond the right way now that camp is underway.
The Buffs reported Sunday and will remain in Colorado Springs until Aug. 8 before returning to Boulder. The closed setup gives Colorado a chance to focus without much outside noise, and Sanders appears determined to use that time to sharpen the standard before the season starts.
