It’s been five years since Daniel Craig officially stepped away from the James Bond franchise following No Time to Die, and fans are still waiting for an answer to the biggest question surrounding 007’s future: who will be the next Bond? The search for Craig’s successor has sparked endless speculation, with everyone from Aaron Taylor-Johnson to Jacob Elordi linked to the iconic role.
However, recent reports suggest the field is finally narrowing, with Slow Horses star Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and Josh O’Connor reportedly among those invited to participate in final screen tests. With Dune director Denis Villeneuve attached to the next installment, excitement is understandably building as the franchise prepares for an entirely new era.
Of course, Bond’s legacy extends well beyond the secret agent himself, with several beloved supporting characters becoming just as recognizable over the decades. And while fans continue debating who will inherit the license to kill, another legendary Bond character is officially making a comeback. M, the formidable head of MI6 and one of the franchise’s most iconic figures, is officially returning in an exciting new release.

While fans continue waiting for news about the next James Bond, one of the franchise’s most iconic characters is officially returning to the spotlight. Dame Judi Dench, who portrayed M across two generations of Bond films, is revisiting her legendary career in a brand-new nonfiction book, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It?, releasing today, November 3, 2026.
Published by St. Martin’s Press, the 368-page memoir is written in collaboration with Dench’s longtime friend Brendan O’Hea and promises an intimate look at her extraordinary life, including her unforgettable time as the head of MI6.
Dench first appeared as M in 1995’s GoldenEye 31 years ago, starring alongside Pierce Brosnan and becoming the first woman to portray the character in the franchise’s history. Her stern, uncompromising portrayal quickly became a defining part of the series, eventually carrying over into Daniel Craig’s era beginning with Casino Royale in 2006. Her character’s story reached an emotional conclusion in 2012’s Skyfall, making her one of the few Bond supporting characters whose departure became a major moment in the franchise.
Of course, Dench’s career extends well beyond James Bond, and her new memoir explores her remarkable achievements across seven decades of acting. From her early years growing up in York to her celebrated performances in London’s West End and on Broadway, the book offers a fascinating look at the experiences that shaped her career. Readers can also expect reflections on her Oscar-winning performance in Shakespeare in Love, alongside her numerous other accolades, including Tony Awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Olivier Awards.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dench discusses her personal struggles with self-doubt, shares hilarious behind-the-scenes stories and pranks, and reflects on her marriage to the late actor Michael Williams. The memoir also explores her lifelong passion for animals and nature, offering a very up close and personal perspective on the beloved actress.
While Dench isn’t officially returning to portray M in another James Bond film, Is It Too Late to Make a Run for It? gives fans an opportunity to revisit one of the franchise’s most memorable performances through the actress’s own memories on set and in preparing for the role, all while celebrating the remarkable career that made her a Hollywood legend.
