Roberto De Zerbi insists his ultimate aim is for Tottenham to compete for the Premier League title against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
When De Zerbi took over at Spurs, the club were embroiled in a relegation battle before he guided his side away from danger with impressive victories over Wolves and Everton in the final five matches of the season, eventually finishing 17th.
That lowly finish followed another 17th-place campaign the previous season, although Spurs did lift the Europa League trophy during that campaign.
Since then, Tottenham have significantly strengthened their squad, with Savio, Sandro Tonali, Matheus Fernandes, Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson among those to arrive.
De Zerbi was asked whether he feels there is now less pressure on him.
“No,” he replied. “I feel pressure because I’m working in one of the best clubs in the world.
“I would like to help this club to compete, to win the titles. I don’t know about this season, I don’t know about next season, but in the end it’s my big personal target.
“The club didn’t ask me for anything, just to compete, just to work well, but I think we have nothing less than the other big clubs in the Premier League.
“Especially now, I can’t say before me, but now we are moving very well in the transfer market, and why not?
“I can’t understand why Tottenham can’t compete with Liverpool, with Manchester City, with Chelsea, with Arsenal.
“I don’t understand why Tottenham can’t spend the same money as Chelsea, Liverpool. Explain to me, because I’m not so smart to understand.”

De Zerbi was also asked what needs to change at Spurs for them to compete consistently with England’s leading clubs.
The Italian believes a change in mentality is required after two successive seasons of struggling near the bottom of the Premier League.
“The mentality of the players,” he said. “Because, after two seasons like this, I would like to win five games in a row.
“If we win five games in a row, we are changing the habits. The environment of the team group, the medical staff, the physical staff, my staff.
“I think we are maybe not right now, but in a few weeks, I think we are ready to win three, four, five games in a row.”
