Steven Gerrard has named former Manchester United captain Roy Keane as the one player he wish he’d played alongside during his career.

Gerrard and Keane were direct rivals on either side of theLiverpool-Manchester United rivalry during the early noughties.

Keane won 17 trophies during his time at Old Trafford, including sevenPremier League titles and the Champions League.

Gerrard has spoken about the Irishman as being a midfield benchmark during his early career, before taking on Keane in match-ups as he grew into the Liverpool side. Both are regarded as among the most dominant midfielders of their era.

Speaking toThe Overlap Daily this week, Gerrard named Keane as the player he’d have liked to have played alongside.

‘We would have been awesome together’: Gerrard hails Roy Keane as his dream midfield partner

“Roy Keane. When I get asked this question I always try to think of someone that would complement me, who I feel I would have complemented them. I think we would have been awesome together. So, probably Roy Keane.”

Gerrard previously revealed that Manchester United had made an informal approach to sign him from Liverpool.

Sir Alex Ferguson asked Gary Neville to pose the question to Gerrard while the pair were together on international duty with England in 2004, as United sought a long-term replacement for Keane.

“When we were away with England, he knocked on my door. You know when you look through the little keyhole,” Gerrard told Open Goal.

“I like Gary, he’s a good guy, but I was like, ‘What does he want me for?’ He said, ‘Look, don’t shoot the messenger, but I’ve been told to come and ask the question if there’s any possible chance you would play for Manchester United.'”

Gerrard’s said his reply was short and predictable: “Gary, just leave.”
