After winning NL Player of the Month in September of 2025, hopes were high for Daylen Lile entering the 2026 season. He was expected to emerge as a key secondary piece alongside James Wood and CJ Abrams. Lile did that in 2026, but only sort of. This season was a mixed bag for the 23 year old.

When the dust settled, Lile fell a bit short of my expectations for him, but he did not have a bad season. He ended the year with a .246 average, a .725 OPS with 22 homers and 89 RBIs. After hitting .299 with an .845 OPS in 91 games as a rookie, he took a bit of a step back at the plate. It would be unfair to label his season as a poor one though.

One of the reasons for that is his defensive improvements in 2026. As a rookie, Lile compiled a -10 fielding run value in left field. This season that number was +2. His reads were a lot sharper and he made better use of his elite speed in the outfield. Lile displayed a level of comfort in the outfield this year that was nowhere to be found in the past.

Daylen Lile made improving his defense a priority entering 2026, and he’s delivered.

This was an improvement Lile knew he had to make following his rookie year and he got it done. Lile would regularly post videos of him working on his defense last offseason and we saw the result of that hard work. If anything, Lile may have been too laser focused on improving his defense last offseason.

Lile actually retained most of what made him great as a hitter in 2026. He was still an above average contact hitter and did a nice job hitting the ball at optimal angles. Lile does a great job elevating the ball.

Moving forward, I want to see more line drives and slightly fewer flyballs though. In 2025, Lile had a 32.3% line drive rate which is elite. This year it was 23% which is good, but obviously not as good. That is part of the reason we saw a dip in his batting average. He hit more fly balls and less line drives, which resulted in more homers, but also more outs.

The biggest issue for Lile at the plate was chasing pitches though. Even during Spring Training, I saw a noticeable spike in chase from him. That continued into the season. His chase rate went from 26.7% in 2025 to 38.5% this season. For context, a 26.7% chase rate is slightly better than average, while a 38.5% rate is in Keibert Ruiz territory.

Nats fans have given Daylen Lile his fair share of criticism this year (deservedly for the most part), but he’s been quite good this year. It’s unfortunate that his chase rate has spiked from 25% to 38% since his z-contact% is just about where it was last year. His whiff rate is… pic.twitter.com/Y2MNZ80znu

For Lile to be that well above average bat, he will have to chase less. He has shown an ability to do that in the past, so I have faith he can pull this off. It is not like Keibert Ruiz or Luis Garcia Jr., who have always been high chase players.

With that high chase, Lile became a mediocre offensive player this year. He posted a 94 wRC+ and a 97 OPS+. From a value perspective, Lile had 1.5 fWAR and 1.8 bWAR. In 2026, Daylen Lile was pretty much an average starter. That is not bad, but I expected more after what he showed as a rookie.

At just 23 years old, I am still bullish on Lile’s ability to improve. Throughout this season, Lile showed flashes of elite play. The way he took over that series against the Reds early in the year is something I will not easily forget. He has the talent and mentality to be a good player for a long time.

This was a really interesting season from Lile. On the one hand, he showed much improved defense and quite a bit of power. Before this season, I did not view Lile as a guy who could be a 25 home run hitter. However, he got to 22 this season and he is not at his ceiling yet.

There were times this year where you could tell Lile was frustrated and pressing. Blake Butera talked a lot about how hard Lile is on himself. He is one of those guys whose play dictates his mood. I love the fire, but as he matures, I think he will harness that competitive edge in a healthier way.

I feel like this season set the floor for Lile. It is tough for me to believe he will be below this level with his tools. Lile learned a lot from this year, and I think he could be in for a big 2027 season. He has such a sweet swing and is an exciting player to watch when he is on his game. Despite an up and down season, I would still be happy if he was extended.

Daylen Lile is a solid player, but there is still room for growth. If he can fine tune his swing decisions, Lile can be a good starter for this team in the coming years. I really like how he plays the game and the fire he has. Hopefully he can fully break out in 2027.
