Matteo Darmian is set to sign for Bologna after completing the final part of his medical checks, according to Niccolò Ceccarini’s report for TuttoMercatoWeb. The defender is expected to put pen to paper on Thursday after spending several days training with the club.
The 36-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Inter at the end of June. His agreement with Bologna is expected to cover the remainder of the season, with earlier reporting from Fabrizio Romano also outlining an option for a further year.
Darmian completed additional medical examinations on Wednesday. Bologna had taken time to assess his condition following injury problems last season and his spell without a club, with the defender also featuring in a friendly against Ascoli during the evaluation process.
He has already worked with Raffaele Palladino at the club’s Casteldebole training ground. The final checks followed the initial tests carried out last week, and TMW now reports that the remaining steps concern the signing of the contract.
Bologna turned to the free-agent market after Emil Holm suffered a serious injury while playing for Sweden on September 25. The right-back required surgery on a hamstring tendon and is expected to miss between four and six months, according to Il Resto del Carlino.
Darmian can play on either side of the defense or as part of a back three. He would give Palladino another option alongside Nadir Zortea while Holm recovers.
The Italian spent six seasons at Inter, making 218 appearances and recording 13 goals and 13 assists. He won nine trophies, including three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia titles and three Italian Super Cups.
Earlier in his career, Darmian played in the Premier League for Manchester United, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League. He made his 300th Serie A appearance against Torino in April, shortly before the end of his Inter career.
