Cruz Azul has turned down a second offer from AS Monaco for midfielder Erik Lira, but the Mexican club has not closed the door on a move that Lira himself says is still coming.
Monaco’s improved proposal was worth $6 million fixed plus $2 million in add-ons for 80 percent of Lira’s economic rights, according to Infobae. Cruz Azul rejected the bid over how the variable payments are structured. The French club ties its bonuses to team objectives such as Champions League qualification or trophies, and Cruz Azul wants bonuses linked instead to Lira’s individual performance, a safer structure for a selling club that wants guaranteed value regardless of how Monaco’s season goes.
Lira remains under contract at Cruz Azul, where he has played since 2022, and is expected to be available for this weekend’s match against Atlas unless a deal is finalized first.
The 26-year-old midfielder has become one of the more coveted Liga MX exports this year on the back of his performance at the 2026 World Cup, where he started every one of Mexico’s matches under Javier Aguirre. That tournament form is what pushed Monaco to move for him in the first place, and Carlos Aviña, the club’s Mexican sporting director, is seen as a natural bridge for the transfer given his familiarity with Liga MX talent.
Money is not the deciding factor for Lira. A rival offer from Al Jazira in the UAE was worth $14 million, well above what Monaco has put on the table, but Lira has prioritized a move to Europe over the bigger paycheck. He has said he intends to leave for Europe, though without committing to a firm departure date, leaving Cruz Azul to negotiate from a position where the player’s preference is already public.
For Monaco, landing a Liga MX regular who started every World Cup game for his country would be a low-cost addition to a midfield that already looks to reload personnel most transfer windows. For Cruz Azul, the calculation is straightforward: sell high on a player who has already signaled he wants out, but not so cheap that the bonus structure lets Monaco pay a discounted price if the team underperforms.
With Cruz Azul having rejected two Monaco offers and two other bids reportedly still under review, the next move belongs to Monaco. A third proposal that addresses the bonus structure, rather than simply raising the fixed fee, looks like the more likely path to getting this deal done before Lira plays his next match for Cruz Azul.
