The Boston Red Sox have a little more than 30 games remaining before the Major League Baseball trade deadline on Aug. 3.

Despite the Red Sox sitting at the bottom of their division with a disappointing 32-45 record, the team is still realistically within striking distance of earning a playoff spot. Boston’s pitching has been great this season, with the team boasting the fourth-lowest team ERA in all of baseball, but the offense has struggled.

Boston needs to turn things around sooner rather than later, especially with the impending trade deadline. The Red Sox made it known earlier this season that they were actively looking to acquire a right-handed bat to bolster their offense, but it’s unclear what the team will do as losses pile up.

When asked what the trade deadline could look like for the Red Sox, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said the team will be “realistic,” but isn’t convinced just yet that Boston will be sellers.

“We’ll be realistic and do what is best for the organization,” Breslow said on Tuesday, as transcribed by The Boston Globe’s Tim Healey. “But I still think that we’re capable of playing better and stacking some wins together and hope that we can do that in the (coming days and weeks). The first thing we need to do is take care of what’s happening here and do everything we can to figure out how to play better baseball and stack some wins together.

“We’re still not at a point where that decision is clear. Because like I said, we’ve got a lot of baseball games to play between now and then, and we’re going to do everything we can to get the ship righted for 2026.”

The Red Sox have clearly dug themselves into a hole with their struggles this season, but there’s still hope they can bounce back. Boston’s pitching has been great, so if the offense can find a spark, perhaps the team can go on a run. 

How the Red Sox play in the next few weeks will be pivotal in deciding what the organization does at the trade deadline.
