The opening week of the 2026 NFL season did not go according to plan for the Dallas Cowboys. Entering the year with high expectations following a defensive overhaul, Dallas stumbled in a 28-20 Week 1 defeat against the division-rival New York Giants. The frustrating loss left front office decision-makers searching for answers, including executive vice president Stephen Jones.
Appearing on 105.3 The Fan, Jones did not hide his feelings regarding the flat performance on Sunday Night Football.
“I’d be the first to admit that I was very surprised and disappointed,” Jones said. “I do think this can be a quick fix, but at the same time, we also gotta understand this is a work in progress. I love the culture and DNA on this team still.”

The frustration is completely understandable given how the game played out at MetLife Stadium. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb caught five passes for 44 yards and a touchdown, but the ground attack sputtered, producing just 69 rushing yards on 18 carries. On the other side of the ball, the revamped Dallas defense surrendered 395 total yards and four touchdowns to quarterback Jaxson Dart and the Giants.
Despite the lackluster start, Jones expressed confidence that the roster possesses enough talent and leadership to right the ship. He emphasized that the organization expects an immediate response when the team takes the field again.
“I know that we got the right kind of guys on this team that I think will answer the bell, and we’ll continue to get better,” Jones added. “I think it will be with urgency. And I think we’ll see a much better product on Sunday.”
Dallas gets its chance at redemption in Week 2, needing a sharp response to avoid falling into an early 0-2 hole.
