Could Commanders look to Patriots to bolster wide receiver position?

The Washington Commanders have a serious battle going on at the wide receiver position. Terry McLaurin is the undisputed WR1 in the room, but there’s no clear hierarchy after that. Treylon Burks has taken first-team reps, Luke McCaffrey and Dyami Brown are waiting in the wings, and rookie Antonio Williams could be someone who surprises everyone.

Still, there’s long been talk about the Commanders making room for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Given the 49ers’ hesitation to release him, though, and the Commanders’ lack of desire to trade for him, nothing about the Aiyuk situation is certain. This could leave Adam Peters searching for answers if no one sets themselves apart. In the event that happens, ESPN’s Dan Graziano has another option: New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte.

Boutte has been productive in a part-time role for the Patriots, catching nine touchdowns over the past two seasons. He turned 24 last month. The 2023 sixth-round pick has just one year left on his contract at $3.674 million, and the acquisitions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs might just make things too crowded in New England‘s wide receivers room.

The Patriots have received calls on Boutte and likely will continue to do so. And as always, unless and until we see a contract extension, we’re justified in wondering whether the player is in the team’s long-term plans. The Raiders and Commanders stand out as two teams that could still use help at wide receiver.

Boutte is definitely facing tall odds with the Patriots’ acquisitions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, but that doesn’t automatically mean he’s on the trading block. He’s proven he can step up in a pinch, and Mike Vrabel might not be willing to part with him in the event of an injury.

If the Patriots decide to trade Boutte, the Commanders are likely to be one of the first teams they’ll call. However, this seems like an unlikely trade that Peters will make. Boutte has shown signs that he can produce on the field, but there’s nothing in his history that indicates he’s a significantly better option than anyone the Commanders already have. And that makes a trade for him not very likely.
